🎉 Congratulations Chey & Anzac! 💛

Our August Horse of the Month has officially been crowned!

Anzac came into Chey’s life at a time when she never thought she would open her heart to another horse again. After tragically losing her heart horse in 2025, Chey had sworn she wouldn’t get another - until this very special 2yo came along.

Since then, Anzac has taught her so much and, in Chey’s words, has simply “picked up where my old boy left off.” A truly one in a billion companion and a partnership that feels like it was meant to be. And when it comes to dinner, there’s one clear favourite - Mitavite Munga! 💛

Thank you, Chey, for sharing Anzac’s beautiful story with us. We feel very lucky to be able to celebrate the special horses and partnerships within our Mitavite community.

Didn’t win this month? Don’t worry - all current entries will automatically roll over into next month’s Horse of the Month, and we’d love to welcome new entries too! We can’t wait to read more of your incredible stories. 🐴✨

QUICK TIP TUESDAY | Feed prior to exercise or travel

Did you know a horse’s stomach is divided into two distinct regions?

The lower glandular region naturally produces gastric acid and has protective mechanisms to help prevent acid damage. In contrast, the upper non-glandular region has very little protection from acid and is where gastric ulcers most commonly occur.

When a horse exercises or travels on an empty stomach, gastric acid can splash onto the sensitive upper region, increasing the risk of ulcer formation.

We recommend feeding long-stem roughage, such as hay, approximately 15–30 minutes before exercise or transport.

Long-stem forage provides two important benefits:

It forms a fibrous mat within the stomach, helping to reduce acid splashing onto the sensitive upper region.

The extra chewing stimulates saliva production, which naturally helps buffer stomach acid.

This simple feeding strategy can help support gastric health, particularly for horses that are exercised, transported regularly or are prone to gastric ulcers.

QUICK TIP TUESDAY | Be your horse’s hydro homie 💧

Maintaining good hydration is essential for your horse’s health, performance and recovery.

Horses can become dehydrated through sweating during exercise or hot, humid weather. During the cooler months, they may also naturally drink less water, particularly when temperatures drop.

A simple way to help encourage water intake is by wetting down hard feeds or feeding soaked fibre feeds. Adding salt to the diet can also help replace sodium lost through sweat and encourage your horse to drink.

As a general guide:

💧 500 kg horse: 30–40 g of salt per day
💧 300 kg horse: 10–15 g of salt per day

Small changes can make a big difference when it comes to keeping your horse hydrated and supporting their overall wellbeing.

QUICK TIP TUESDAY | Introducing new feeds to your horse

When introducing a new feed or adding a new ingredient to your horse’s diet, it’s important to make the change gradually.

Horses have a delicate digestive system, and the beneficial microbes within the hindgut need time to adapt to dietary changes. Introducing a new feed too quickly may increase the risk of digestive upset or disturbances.

We recommend transitioning to a new feed gradually over 7–14 days, allowing the digestive system and hindgut microbiome time to adjust.

As a simple guide, gradually increase the new feed by approximately 250–500 g each day, while reducing the previous feed until the transition is complete.

Slow and steady feed changes can help support digestive health and set your horse up for success.

QUICK TIP TUESDAY | Small meals, big benefits

As the weather cools, many horses require additional feed to help maintain their weight. While increasing the daily feed intake may be necessary, it’s important to divide larger rations into smaller meals throughout the day rather than feeding one large meal.

Horses have a relatively small stomach, so feeding smaller, more frequent meals helps support digestion, improves starch utilisation and reduces the risk of digestive disturbances.

For example, a 500 kg horse requiring 4 kg of Mitavite Cool Vitality per day should have this divided into two 2 kg meals – one in the morning and one in the evening. If even larger daily feed intakes are required, splitting the ration into three or more meals is recommended.

Small changes to feeding management can make a big difference to your horse’s digestive health and overall wellbeing.
