This Refugee Week (15–21 June), we celebrate the voices, leadership and lived experience of Mater’s Refugee Health Advisory Group.

Supported by Mater's Refugee and Multicultural Health Service, this group of 11 refugee health consultants represent communities from South Sudan, Eritrea, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and Myanmar (including the Rohingya community).

Through their work, they help shape more inclusive and responsive healthcare — advising clinicians and policymakers, strengthening health literacy, and supporting their communities to access services.

Together, they are improving health outcomes and ensuring services are built on trust, understanding and community connection.

Why is bowel cancer rising in younger Australians?

Mater Research is working to find answers - investigating how changes in the gut microbiome (the bacteria in our digestive system) may be contributing to increasing bowel cancer rates.

Led by Associate Professor Jakob Begun, the study is exploring how everyday factors may drive inflammation and tumour development, including:

🍔 Ultra-processed foods
🥩 High red meat consumption
🥗 Low fibre diets
💊 Antibiotic use
🧪 Food additives

For Aimee Geeves - diagnosed at just 39 with no noticeable symptoms or family history - the research offers hope for better prevention and earlier detection.

"I was feeling completely fine right up until the week I went to the emergency department with strong stomach pain," she said.

Baby Isabella is the newest recruit, and we have a feeling mum Emma and dad Kyle are a little bit chuffed!

Earlier this month, Mater’s Mission Integration Managers and Pastoral Care Managers came together in Townsville for the annual Mission Muster — a three‑day gathering focused on formation, collaboration and renewal.

Bringing together colleagues from across the state, alongside partners in Catholic health and education, the Muster created valuable space to share insights, strengthen relationships and reflect on mission‑led leadership.

Through keynote sessions, meaningful connection and time for retreat, the gathering reinforced a shared commitment to compassionate, values‑driven care — and to the communities Mater serves.

At 69, Ethel Hayden is proving it’s never too late to make a difference. 🌟

The Torres Strait Islander grandmother has become Mater Education’s oldest graduate, completing her Certificate III in Pathology Collection and continuing her 50-year career in healthcare. 💚🤍💙

Ethel will use her new skills to support her local community delivering trusted, culturally connected care when it’s needed most.

“There’s still more work to do… that’s what drives me,” she said.

“Everybody's got to make a little bit of a difference. All of us have a part to play and I still have a lot of passion left in me and that's what drives me.” 💪

Our doctors don’t just save lives — they also create beautiful music 🎼🎻

Last week, members of the Queensland Medical Orchestra, including Mater Senior Staff Specialist Mariko Howlett (violin), Mater Risk Management Architect Jim Palmer (viola), cellist Phil Pollett, and violinists M. Gamer, Crystal Seo and Clara Seo, performed in the foyer of Mater Private Hospital Brisbane.

They played five pieces ranging from Vivaldi to The Beatles, drawing a large and appreciative crowd of Mater people, patients and volunteers.

We’re proud to have such a talented team who collaborate and connect — both inside and outside the hospital 💙

When great food meets great care, it’s a 10/10! 👏😋

In partnership with renowned Australian chef Luke Mangan, Mater’s new menu is built around Dual Proteins — combining animal and plant‑based proteins to deliver meals that are nutritious, balanced and genuinely delicious.

From supporting muscle strength and recovery to delivering essential nutrients and flavour, every dish is designed with health (and taste) in mind.

This approach offers the best of both worlds. By adding plant‑based foods such as beans, lentils, chickpeas and nuts, meals gain more variety and fibre — supporting gut health and helping people feel fuller for longer, without going completely meat‑free.

Mater Private Hospital Mackay came together with Mackay Regional Council, community and volunteer groups to learn traditional weaving from First Nations artist Lee George.

The ‘All In’ weaving project, held as part of National Reconciliation Week, reflects a shared commitment to reconciliation through connection, learning and action — every day.

By contributing to a single woven piece, participants symbolically demonstrated how reconciliation is strengthened when we all play our part.
