Igniting connections in Cairns 🔥 On 10–11 October, Health Workforce Queensland (HWQ) hosted OneNQ Ignite in Cairns, bringing together health professionals, students and early career graduates from across northern Queensland.

The event was part of OneNQ, an NQPHN-funded workforce initiative that CheckUP delivers jointly with HWQ. Our Health Industry Workforce Advisor (IWA), Alina Khalid, was there joining conversations on workforce wellbeing, peer support, and looking after the people who look after others.

🌞 A Standout Health Services “Sip and Screen” event attracted 53 attendees across the Central West communities of Windorah, Jundah, Birdsville, Boulia, Bedourie, and Stonehedge. The event brought together a diabetes educator, podiatrist, clinical lead, and counsellor in one place for the day, providing coordinated access to a range of health services.

🔶 Three organisations travelled together on a CheckUP funded charter: Diabetes Australia, Lives Lived Well and NWRH. This collaboration provided a valuable opportunity for services that would not otherwise have the chance to travel together, helping to strengthen referral pathways, increase awareness of available supports, and foster stronger connections between providers to improve outcomes for local communities.

🛬 As CheckUP’s Eye and Ear Surgery Manager, Amber Hanks, said, “The plane was never really about transportation. It was about building relationships and referral pathways between organisations that don't normally travel together.”

💯 This is just one of the conversations and collaborations highlighted at our latest Queensland Primary Health Care Network event.

☕️ CheckUP was delighted to connect with the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC) team over morning tea during Queensland Mental Health Week 2026.

The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the importance of community, connection and wellbeing. Attendees shared what supports their wellbeing, exchanged positive affirmations, and added their messages and artwork to the community media wall.

Although the week has passed, staying connected and supporting one another remains important.

🩷 We'd love to hear from you. What's your favourite affirmation?

📷️ Check out images from the morning tea.

Thank you for joining us! Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council 🧁

🔶 Queensland has the world's highest rates of skin cancer but for those living in our rural and remote communities, they have limited access to GPs with specialist training in skin cancer medicine.

🔶 The Skin Cancer Early Detection (SCED) program was developed to address this inequity through outreach clinics and upskilling opportunities. Cathie Gillan from Queensland Health highlighted there's no value in rolling into town, telling someone they have a problem, and leaving. The SCED program is designed to diagnose and treat, not just screen and refer.

🔶 Since mid-2023 the program has delivered 187 clinics in 18 communities across Central Queensland, Mackay, Townsville and the North West and South West HHS regions. Our providers have screened 4,060 patients and provided 4,140 occasions of service. Of those, 1,199 patients received pre-cancer treatment and 774 had histologically confirmed cancers - that's roughly one in five patients.

🔶 Forty-six percent of patients reported they'd have to travel two or more hours for an equivalent service, and around a quarter said they simply wouldn't have had a skin check at all.

🔶 Behind each patient number is a person who was able to receive skin cancer early detection care in their home community with friends and family nearby.
