One of the most fascinating parts of a Chinese Medicine consultation is the pulse diagnosis.
When we take your pulse, we're not simply checking your heart rate. We gently feel three positions on each wrist, using three different finger placements and varying pressure to assess the function of your organs, the quality of your Qi (energy), Blood, Yin and Yang, and how well your body is functioning as a whole.
LEFT WRIST
- Cun: Heart & Small Intestine
This position reflects the Heart's role in circulating Blood and housing the "Shen" (mind and spirit). Changes here may suggest issues related to sleep, anxiety, palpitations, emotional wellbeing, or poor circulation.
- Guan: Liver & Gallbladder
The Liver ensures the smooth flow of Qi and stores Blood. A pulse here can provide insight into stress, emotional tension, headaches, menstrual health, tendon and muscle health, digestive stagnation, and how well Qi is moving throughout the body.
- Chi: Kidney Yin & Bladder
This position reflects the body's deep reserves of Yin, including nourishment, cooling, hydration and vitality. It may indicate patterns related to lower back pain, fertility, menopause, ageing, urinary health, night sweats or chronic fatigue.
RIGHT WRIST
- Cun: Lung & Large Intestine
This pulse reflects the Lung's role in respiration, immunity and the movement of defensive Qi. Changes may relate to allergies, asthma, coughs, frequent colds, skin conditions or bowel function.
- Guan: Spleen & Stomach
Often one of the most revealing positions, this reflects digestion and the body's ability to transform food into Qi and Blood. It can indicate poor digestion, bloating, fatigue after eating, dampness, loose stools or nutrient deficiency.
- Chi: Kidney Yang & Reproductive Function
This position reflects warmth, metabolism and the body's motivating energy. It may provide clues about low energy, feeling cold, reduced libido, reproductive health, oedema or hormonal imbalance.
