It’s okay to take a break if you need it, just let someone know.🧡

Video description: In this video, from a seated person's point of view, they are watching someone write on a whiteboard. They open Tap Alert Cards in their HiAlert app and open the screen with the message "I Need a Break". They stand up and show the message to the person writing on the whiteboard, who gestures that it's okay for them to leave.

🧡 Everyone has the right to Self-Advocate.

Self-advocating means expressing and communicating for yourself, your rights, your needs, and your accommodations, so that others can understand, respond and support you.

🧡By self-advocating, it means-
* You understand yourself: What matters to you, what you need, what you find challenging and what helps you.
* You know your needs and supports: What you need to manage your challenges, and how people can support you.
* You communicate your needs: You express yourself and ask others what you need to support you.

Self-Advocating is your right, and your needs matter. You matter. Believe in yourself, understand your needs, and when the moment comes, don’t hesitate to self-advocate.❤️

Image Description: This post shows an image with text that states "You have the right to Self-Advocate. Self-advocating means expressing and communicating for yourself, your rights, your needs, and your accommodations, so that others can understand, respond and support you".

🏥 Expressing yourself in the hospital can be hard for many reasons.

If you need words to communicate when at the hospital, you can use the Medical Communication Board as we did recently.

❤️ Understanding costs nothing, but it changes everything.

🧡 When people with health conditions and disabilities are understood:
• It helps them receive support the way they need
• It helps them access care at the right moment
• It helps them build relationships
• It helps them maintain their independence
• It helps them reduce their risks
• It helps them stop constantly fighting to be understood
• It helps them feel cared about and not alone

⭐If you're not sure how to support someone, the most powerful thing you can do is to ask them how without judgement or assumptions.
