As we continue to recognise Learning Disability Week 2026, we’re shining a spotlight on Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) - a lifelong, brain‑based communication disability that affects the way children understand and use language. DLD is more common than many people realise, yet it often goes unseen, because children with DLD can appear high functioning and still struggle with language in ways that impact learning, friendships and confidence.
We’re proud to acknowledge the incredible work of The DLD Project, an Australian organisation dedicated to raising awareness, improving community understanding and ensuring children and young people with DLD are supported across home, school and community settings. Their mission is simple and powerful: to make DLD visible, understood and supported.
At QPAH our speech pathologists, occupational therapists and music therapists work alongside children with DLD every day. We see firsthand how the right support can strengthen communication, participation and wellbeing. With the right strategies and a team around them, children with DLD can thrive.
This week is a reminder that awareness leads to understanding, and understanding leads to inclusion. When educators, families and communities know what DLD is and how to support it, we create environments where every child can succeed.
