Most people think about injury prevention once they're already injured.

But prevention starts long before pain appears.

Your body often provides clues.

A little more tightness than usual.
A ni**le that keeps returning.
Fatigue that doesn't seem to improve.
Movement that feels different.

These signs don't always mean injury is coming.

But they are worth paying attention to.

Injury prevention isn't about avoiding activity.

It's about preparing your body for the demands you're asking of it.

Strength.
Recovery.
Load management.
Mobility.
Movement quality.

These are often the things that help keep people doing what they love for longer.

Because the goal isn't simply to avoid injury.

It's to build a body that is resilient, adaptable, and capable of supporting the life you want to live.

Happy World Continence Week.

Bladder leakage affects many women across different stages of life, yet it remains one of the least talked about health concerns.
For some, it happens when they cough, sneeze, laugh, run, or exercise.
For others, it shows up as urgency, frequent trips to the bathroom, or planning their day around knowing where the nearest toilet is.

Many women assume it's simply part of ageing, motherhood, exercise, or life.
But while bladder leakage is common, it doesn't mean it's something you have to accept.
Understanding why it's happening is often the first step towards improving it.
This World Continence Week is a reminder that these conversations matter.

Because feeling confident in your body, your movement, and your daily life matters too.
If you've been experiencing bladder leakage or pelvic floor concerns, know that support is available.
You don't have to navigate it alone.

Before I run, I don't start with stretching.

I start with activation.

Living with foot arthritis has taught me that preparation matters.

For me, that means activating the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of my feet before I run, ride, or train.

Not because I'm trying to work harder.

But because I want the right muscles switched on before asking my body to perform.

When muscles aren't prepared for the demands being placed on them, other areas often compensate.

And over time, that's where overload, inefficiency, and sometimes injury can occur.

Whether you're training for an event, returning from injury, or simply wanting to move well, sometimes the biggest difference comes from what you do before the activity even begins.

Performance isn't just about what happens during training.

It's about how you prepare for it.

Most people train harder when they should be training smarter.

When you're preparing for a race, event, competition, or performance, it's easy to focus on doing more.

More kilometres.
More sessions.
More effort.

But performance isn't just built through volume.

It's built through understanding your body.

One of the most valuable things you can do is identify your weak links before they become a problem.

Whether that's a lack of strength, control, mobility, or capacity, these gaps often become the reason injuries occur and performance plateaus.

This is where having a coach or physiotherapist assess your movement can make all the difference.

Because once you know where your weaknesses are, your strength training becomes targeted and purposeful.

Not random.

Not generic.

Specific to the muscles and movement patterns needed for your goal.

The aim isn't just to get to the start line.

It's to get there stronger, more resilient, and ready to perform.

In Episode 7 of *Her Body, Her Story*, we unpack how to identify weak links, optimise performance, and reduce injury risk before your next event.

A sore knee.
A tight calf.
A painful tendon.

Often, these symptoms are the result of another area of the body not doing its job effectively.

When one area lacks strength, control, or capacity, another area is forced to compensate.

Over time, that overload can become pain.

This is why treating symptoms alone isn't always enough.

The goal is to understand what's driving the problem in the first place.

And here's the good news.

An injury doesn't always mean complete rest.

Research has shown that runners who replaced 50% of their running volume with cycling for five weeks experienced no loss in VO₂ max or 5km performance.

Sometimes the answer isn't stopping.

It's training smarter.

In Episode 7 of *Her Body, Her Story*, I unpack how to identify weak links, reduce overload, and keep progressing without making an injury worse.

Whether you're preparing for an Eisteddfod, the Gold Coast Marathon, Cairns Ironman, or any event you've been working towards for months, the last thing you want is an injury disrupting your plans.

As athletes and performers, it's easy to ignore the early warning signs, push through discomfort, or leave injury prevention until it's too late.

In this week's episode of Her Body, Her Story, launching Tuesday, I share exactly what I'm doing to help prevent injury as I prepare for my own upcoming events, and the strategies I'm using to support other athletes and performers doing the same.

We'll talk about recognising the warning signs, managing training loads, recovery, and the small things that can make a big difference when it comes to getting to the start line feeling strong and confident.

Because the goal isn't just to train hard.

It's to actually make it to race day.

If you're preparing for an event and want to give yourself the best chance of staying healthy, performing well, and getting to the start line, this episode is for you.

Podcast launches Tuesday. Stay tuned.

How many times do you actually chew your food?

Because apparently… I gulp.

Lol.

But chewing is something we rarely think about, even though it plays such an important role in digestion, bloating, gut health, and how our body processes food overall.

Sometimes the smallest habits can have a bigger impact on how we feel day to day than we realise.

A good reminder for me to slow down a little more.ellenkessling

Endometriosis is more than just painful periods.

It can impact movement, energy, digestion, performance, and the way someone experiences everyday life.

And for many women, the symptoms are often minimised or misunderstood for years before they receive answers.

This conversation is a reminder that pain should never simply be dismissed as something you “just have to live with.”

In Episode 6 of Her Body, Her Story, we unpack the realities of living with Endometriosis — from bloating and pelvic pain, to surgery, recovery, and learning how to support the body more sustainably.

A practical and honest conversation around women’s health, body awareness, and understanding what your body might be trying to communicate.
