Rye: a little love for your gut microbes

We often talk about what we eat, but gut health is also about what we feed the trillions of microbes living within us.

Rye is a wonderful wholegrain for this reason. It contains fermentable fibres and resistant starch that our digestive enzymes do not fully break down. Instead, they reach the colon, where our microbes can put them to work.

Here are 5 reasons we love rye for the microbiome:

1. It feeds fibre loving microbes

Rye is rich in arabinoxylans and fructans, fermentable fibres that gut bacteria can metabolise.

2. It supports Bifidobacteria

Rye’s fructans provide food for beneficial bacteria, including Bifidobacterium, helping them thrive.

3. It encourages short chain fatty acids

When gut bacteria ferment rye’s fibres, they produce short chain fatty acids, including acetate, propionate and butyrate. These compounds help communicate between the microbiome and gut lining.

4. It brings resistant starch to the party

Some of rye’s starch reaches the colon undigested, where microbes can ferment it. Resistant starch is particularly associated with butyrate producing bacteria.

5. It supports microbial diversity

Different fibres feed different microbes. Rye offers a mix of fermentable carbohydrates, helping support the diverse, resilient gut ecosystem we need.

So perhaps we can think of rye not simply as a grain, but as food for our inner garden.

Try wholegrain rye sourdough or rye crispbread alongside nourishing fats, protein and plenty of colourful plants.

Because sometimes, supporting gut health starts with simply feeding the microbes you’ve already got.

As a complementary medicine practitioner I’m here to support you in what works best for you….

Do you want to use complementary therapies only?

Do you want to use complementary therapies alongside your conventional medicines?

Or do you just need help with some of the side-effects that are the outcome of your conventional therapies?

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of MHT but I understand that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and it’s not a cure all. We all still need help with metabolic challenges, mood challenges & sleep issues, utilising Western herbal medicine and acupuncture alongside MHT has been really beneficial for me and my patients… but there’s no cookie cutter solution!

That’s why my consults take an hour. We deep dive into your case history, review your pathology and put together a treatment plan that works best for you.

Maybe you just need someone dedicated to just you!

1/2 tub of silken tofu
1x tbls of each: cocoa powder, collagen powder, h**p seeds and flaxseeds

Absolutely Acupunture helps with labour prep and natural induction. During the session we do a lot of massage, a lot of touch, a lot of warming moxa & pins…. all helping to bring the energy down and prepare the baby for a happy natural birth.

We also work with breach presentations using the magic of Acupunture!

We kick these sessions off weekly from week 36 weeks and yes I’ve had someone going to labour directly after a session…how good!
