πŸ‘ This week is National Volunteer Week so we're taking this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful volunteers here at NSW Stoma!

πŸ™ We are very fortunate to have 29 lovely volunteers who generously give their time to NSW Stoma in multiple roles.

πŸ“¦ From picking and dispatching orders in our warehouse, manning the reception desk, answering the phone and other admin duties, helping with our education and support services, to ensuring our governance is of the highest standards by serving on our Board, our volunteers are crucial to the smooth and efficient operation of our organisation.

🫢 So to all our volunteers (past, present, and future... could this be you?), we thank you for your time and dedication to NSW Stoma and your fellow ostomates; you are truly invaluable members of team NSW Stoma and we really couldn't do it without you.

πŸ“£ Can you help? Whether it's half a day per month or every week, if you have the time and passion to work with us, we want you! Learn more about volunteering on our website (nswstoma.org.au/volunteers) and email us at [email protected] to express your interest in volunteering. We would love to hear from you!

πŸ“… Did you know May is Crohn's and Colitis Awareness month? And today, May 19, is World IBD Day?

🫢 Many of our members have first-hand experience with Crohn's Disease and/or Ulcerative Colitis, collectively known as Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD). For some ostomates, it's the reason for their stoma.

❗We believe it's important to raise awareness for this debilitating (and all-too-often relentless and treatment-resistant) condition which is why we want to ask: how does Crohn's and ulcerative colitis (or IBD) impact you? What would you want others to know? ❓

We can't wait to hear your story, if you want to share it with us.

πŸ’ Happy Mother's Day from all of us at NSW Stoma! πŸ’

We might be biased, but we think ostomate Mums (osto-Mums?) are the toughest Mums there are. πŸ˜‰

We hope you had a relaxing day with your loved ones as they got a chance to celebrate you and everything you do for them!

πŸ•ŠοΈ We are also conscious that today is a difficult day for those who have lost their Mum - please know that you are in our thoughts, too.

πŸ“… Save the date: Sunday 19th May is Anna's Walk, a fundraising charity walk for bladder cancer awareness.

πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Held by BEAT Bladder Cancer Australia, the charity event is free to attend and held in all Australian capital cities, as well as Tamworth. Anna’s Walk aims to raise awareness of, and much-needed funds to help fight bladder cancer. A volunteer-led patient advocacy charity, BEAT Bladder Cancer also highlights the information and support available for those in need. Bladder cancer is also one of the leading causes of why a person may require a urostomy.

πŸ•ŠοΈ Who was Anna? Anna Lynch was an Australian woman who sadly lost her battle with bladder cancer in September 2017, aged just 45. Anna was the reason BEAT Bladder Cancer Australia was formed by her widower/husband, Adam Lynch.

πŸ’œ In honour of Anna's memory, and to raise awareness of bladder cancer, you're invited to attend Anna's Walk on Sunday, 19th May. Participants are encouraged to wear a splash of purple - Anna's favourite colour.

🫢 Can you remember the moment you realised you had accepted your new life as an ostomate?

It's okay if it hasn't happened yet. Learning to live with - and accept - a stoma takes time and is a journey lived differently for everyone.

But if you're struggling, it may help to know that many ostomates out there once felt just like you do - and now live comfortably having accepted their new life with a stoma.

It's not the same, sure, but in many ways, it is better.

❣️ Can you relate? What was the moment you realised you'd accepted your stoma?

We can't wait to hear your responses to this one! πŸ₯°

Have you seen our recently revamped 'Stoma Stories' page on our website...?

One of the stories featured is Renee's. Renee is an inspiring and accomplished young woman who has achieved many things despite, and because of, her stoma. A wife, mother, and ostomate, Renee is also Secretary of the Board of NSW Stoma.

Read more about Renee's story - in her own words - on our website here: https://www.nswstoma.org.au/stories/meet-renee/

AT NSW Stoma, we're committed to fostering a sense of community among our members, and sharing our stories is just one way we do that.

We hope you enjoy Renee's story, and we again thank Renee for sharing it with us.

❓ Have you ever thought about sharing your stoma story...? If and when you'd like to, we'd love to share it with your fellow ostomates... ❓We're continuing our 'ask an ostomate' series, and this time we're asking you: What's better now? What can you do now with a stoma that you couldn’t do before? πŸ€”

At NSW Stoma, we recognise and appreciate that life with a stoma isn't always easy. It's normal to feel a rollercoaster of emotions when it comes to adapting to a life with a stoma. Hopefully though, focussing on the positives can help you appreciate your new lease on life, despite of, and because of, your stoma.

πŸ“š If you need help, there are many great free resources available - including mental health resources - that may help you lead a more comfortable life with your stoma. To learn more, head to our website and click the drop-down 'Resources' menu to find an array of resources that may be helpful to you. Another option is to see your local STN (stomal therapy nurse) (or our lovely STN, Anne Marie Lyons) who can help and guide you on this new journey.

🫢 Ostomy support groups are another great way to find comfort and understanding in other ostomates that likely know what you're going through and the emotions you have felt and are feeling. To find your local ostomy support group, contact your local STN or head to our website and under the 'Services' drop-down menu, click 'Other Support Groups'. If you need further support, it may be worth engaging the help of a counsellor or psychologist for specialised mental health care.

❓ But back to our question for you... What's better now? What can you do now with a stoma that you couldn’t do before? πŸ€”

We can't wait to read your answers! 😊
