Is your unhealed inner child running your life?

Ever feel like you’re not in control of your life or behaviour? … Like an unseen force is pulling your strings and hijacking you at every opportunity, keeping you stuck in a cycle of repeating patterns that are self- sabotaging and unhealthy?

Even as adults, unresolved traumatic imprints, including those of our wounded inner child, subconsciously drive our thoughts, beliefs, behaviours and patterns, until we begin to acknowledge and heal them.

The younger parts of us that were hurt; that had unmet needs; that shut down to keep us safe; continue to seek to meet their needs and protect us, replaying survival patterns and behaviours, that are out of alignment with our true nature and how we want to be showing up as adults in our lives.

When we can begin to safely connect with, integrate and heal these parts and be guided to gently metabolise emotional and traumatic imprints stored in the body and subconscious, we begin to transform our patterns and behaviour, bringing them into alignment with our authentic nature and self- expression.

We begin to take back control of our lives and move towards the life we desire as we truly step into our power, developing greater capacity for self -regulation and self – mastery of our emotions, actions and choices.

The goal of trauma healing isn’t to be completely regulated and calm 100% of the time… And I should know.

As a somatic trauma therapist with her own lived experience of complex trauma, I am committed to both my own healing and guiding others to heal from the impact of trauma in their lives.

I also know that anyone who says they are fully regulated 100% of the time is, (without being judgemental) simply not being honest with themselves.

Healing trauma doesn’t mean that we are never going to be triggered… Trauma healing looks and feels like;

· Growing in our awareness of our triggers;
· Slowly, safely, developing the capacity to stay with the felt sense of the underlying traumatic imprint in the body when triggered and
· Increasing our capacity to return from being triggered and becoming dysregulated, to a regulated state.

Trauma healing isn’t big, loud, fast or perfect… It requires a safe, slow and gentle somatic approach to enable unresolved traumatic imprints to metabolise and integrate through the body, with no expectation or pressure to reach a final destination or attain perfection.

Trauma healing is not something that can be forced, directed, or controlled at will...

Neither is it possible to ‘transcend’, ‘transmute’, ‘purge’, deny or deceive our way out of unresolved trauma held in the body…

We can, however, be guided to safely explore, embody and resolve traumatic imprints stored in the body and subconscious mind, through the somatic practice of Embodied Processing.

When guided by a skilled Embodied Processing Practitioner to safely explore through the felt sense of traumatic imprints within the body, we can begin to gently, incrementally process and integrate the unresolved emotions, energetic charge and subconscious imprints of stored trauma, without having to re-visit traumatic events or memories.

This holistic, somatic approach, applied within the container of safety that Embodied Processing provides, allows our bodies to resolve and complete trauma loops, discharge stored emotions and enables the nervous system to restore, re- organise and return to a regulated state, facilitating re-connection, wholeness and long term trauma healing.

Those of you who know me know how dedicated I am to helping others to overcome the impact of trauma in their lives, in my role as a Somatic Trauma Therapist and Trauma Informed Life Coach.

You also know that my work is done quietly behind closed doors and that I'm not a fan of promoting myself on social media!

But I do love to write and am passionate about raising awareness about trauma and trauma healing, so I've teamed up with Brainz Magazine, a free online magazine dedicated to health, wellness and personal development, to publish a series of articles that I'm busy writing to share with you and the world.

My first article, "What is Trauma"... an educational piece about how trauma develops, stores in the body and impacts our functioning until it can be resolved, is published and live now.

You'll find the link to the article in the comments below, or find it via your search engine.

In my second article, coming soon, I dive deeper into how traumatic imprint can be safely resolved and the pathway forwards through trauma healing.

Hope you enjoy, feel free to share it around and thanks for reading!

A simple message of support from me to you, with love and compassion.

It's at this time of year that we consciously and subconsciously, assess and review the year as it draws to a close and, being our own harshest critics, judge ourselves based on our perceived achievements or 'failures'.

It's easy to focus on the deficits, the missed opportunities and disappointments and to place blame on ourselves for needing to do better, do more or try harder... for what we think we should have done, or could have done differently, in hindsight.

But the reality is that our inner critic is rooted in unresolved emotional and traumatic imprint stored in our body and subconscious mind, informing our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves, and it loves these opportunities to be the loudest voice in our head, if we let it.

As someone who has done battle for many years with my inner critic, I continue to grow in my capacity to love and show kindness not only to others, but to my self, as I continue to gently embody, process, discharge and resolve the unresolved traumatic imprint that I carry, a lifelong journey and commitment to my-self, those that I Iove and those that I serve as a guide, life coach and facilitator of trauma healing.

I understand how unresolved trauma impacts me and how that plays out in my patterns, behaviours, parenting and personality... how it informs any limiting beliefs that hold me back... when I begin to criticise my self or compare my self to others, I return to self-love, self- acceptance and kindness, knowing there is no need or place for self-judgement or criticism.

I know that I am on my path and my journey back to my authentic self and wholeness... and that I am doing the best that I can do in every moment and that when I perceive that I 'fail', life will present me with another opportunuty for growth, when that door opens again... I have learned not to focus on my achievements, but on my efforts, and what that has taken, knowing that I did the best that I had the capacity to do, at each moment in time.

So remember, as the door closes on this year, to focus on the efforts that you have made in every way and what that has taken from you every day... and know that not only the new year, but every day is yet another door opening to new opportunities for you to grow and heal and continue to do the best that you can do in each moment.

Our inner healing work is never 'done'... we are all on our own individual paths... and that's ok. Please, be kind to your self 💗 be patient, knowing you're doing the best that you can do, in this and every moment🙏🌹

The conditions that create trauma include a lack of safety and emotional overwhelm which result in unresolved traumatic imprint that stores in our physical body, emotions, subconscious mind and nervous system, causing nervous system and emotional dysregulation, physical health issues, false and limiting beliefs, trauma responses/ triggers, and unhelpful survival patterns.

Embodied Processing is a holistic trauma therapy, rooted in somatic inquiry, in which we establish safety, connection and co-regulation to facilitate the process of gently exploring, embodying and discharging unresolved traumatic imprint and return to long term nervous system regulation and emotional mastery.

We all carry trauma to varying degrees, while many of us don’t realise this, due to misconceptions about what trauma is.

It's well known that trauma is absolutely the residual impact of events that we experience as overwhelming and threatening to our sense of safety, however, it is less well known that trauma is also a result of our primary human needs being unmet in some way, particularly in childhood… there are obvious causes including abuse and neglect and other examples, including a parent that is emotionally or physically unavailable; a caregiver who is not present or attuned to our needs, or an environment that is oppressive to us in any way… when a child feels unsafe to express parts of themselves, their feelings or their personality, this also results in traumatic imprint that over time, causes repression of those parts, which imprints in the psyche, body and nervous system, causing disconnection; trauma responses, negative and false, limiting beliefs about ourselves and our capacity to function in the world.

We develop survival patterns, trauma responses and protective behaviours as a mechanism to keep us safe from future threats, which we continue to repeat until we can begin to process the unresolved trauma that is stored in our body, subconscious, emotions and psyche.

In Embodied Processing, a holistic, somatic based trauma therapy, I guide you at your own pace to connect with your body and a resource of safety in which to anchor, then begin to gently explore, touch into and embody stored traumatic imprint stored in the body, emotions and subconscious, enabling unresolved trauma to process and trauma loops to complete.

This holistic, safe, somatic process also facilitates integration of orphaned parts allowing us to return to connection and wholeness. We begin to move out of overwhelm and into lasting, long term, nervous system regulation. We begin to heal deep wounds and finally reclaim our life from the impact of trauma.

Father’s Day 2024

Father’s Day has been just another day for me for as long as I can remember.

I don’t have conscious memories of being 6 years old, when suddenly, my father died, leaving my mother and my 2 young brothers, aged 5 and 7, alone, lost, scared and heartbroken.

He was sick for a little while, then he was gone.

For 45 years, I have not cried for him or remembered him. For 45 years, I locked away the part of me that was unable to, that did not feel safe to, process the experience of losing him.

Finally, today, at the age of 51, the tears suddenly come... A photo triggers a memory of him and finally, unexpectedly, after locking the traumatic imprint of his passing away in my body for 45 years... finally, the tears begin to flow.

Finally, I innately connect to the feeling in my body of sadness for his sudden passing when I was a little girl... sadness for my mother, who lost the love of her life and never recovered... sadness for myself and my 2 brothers, who all lost their daddy, all so young and confused... sadness that I was so young that I have no memories of my father to hold on to, or share with his grandson...sadness that I did not grow up with my father’s love and support.

Finally, I am connected to my body, emotions and resourced in safety and it is safe for me to hold and process these feelings... finally, I begin to heal this part of me, as I allow myself to integrate her, the 6 year old girl I have protected and kept safe for so long... finally I can begin to cherish her, love her and celebrate her.

Finally, I can connect to the love that I have always held locked away in my heart for my father, acknowledging the love that I know he had for me and finally, I can send him love, today and every day.

Finally, it is... I am, safe.

Post - traumatic stress is not a ‘disorder’, or an ‘abnormal functioning of the mind’, ... rather, it is the body’s natural protective response to an experience of overwhelm and at the same time, the absence, or lack of safety.

When we are exposed to an event or an environment in which we feel overwhelming distress; fear; harm; threat or emotions and are unable to access a resource of safety to enable us to fully process the experience, the unprocessed overwhelm results in traumatic imprint.

The unprocessed traumatic imprint is stored in our bodies, emotions, subconscious mind and nervous system causing dysregulation, and begins to inform our thoughts, physical holding patterns, behaviours and resulting in trauma responses to triggers of future perceived threats to our safety.

These trauma responses and survival patterns have historically been described and referred to as ‘symptoms’ of a ‘mental illness’ and diagnosed as a medical ‘disorder’, particularly PTSD, by the psychiatric profession, with little to no understanding of trauma or traumatic imprint and how it stores in the body, until it can be safely and gently somatically explored, embodied and resolved.

Post - traumatic stress is our body’s innate way of keeping us safe and functioning in the world. It is our body’s natural method of self- preservation and survival.

With this awareness, we can begin to understand more fully the experience of trauma as a normal human response to overwhelm and lack of safety.

We can begin to change our language and remove the terms ‘disorder’ and ‘mental illness’ from their association with post- traumatic stress.

We can stop labelling people who are experiencing natural responses to trauma as having a medical disorder and begin to remove the stigma of experiencing post -traumatic stress, an intelligent and innate response to overwhelm, shared by all of us throughout our human experience.
