This is something we hear often working in systems out of our control.

The desire to help is one of the greatest strengths in our sector.

But sometimes it can also make it difficult to set limits.

Healthy boundaries and looking after yourself is something you can actually control, and gives you future energy to be the change.

A sign your self-care might need attention: you can list five things everyone else needs, but you go quiet when someone asks what you need.

Self-care isn’t just bubble baths and early nights. It’s noticing when you’ve been running on empty for so long that rest doesn’t even register as an option anymore.

If that sounds familiar, this is your gentle reminder to check in with yourself the way you’d check in with someone you love.

One of the things I've learnt over the years is that caring for people is only one part of the role.

The other part is learning how to care sustainably and intentionally

Many workers enter this sector because they are compassionate, empathetic and deeply committed.

But nobody teaches you how to know when to step back.

If this resonates with you, I have a free resource called 9 Simple Guidelines for Maintaining Professional Boundaries for Disability and Caring Supports to help you build sustainable practices while continuing to provide compassionate support.

Visit our website to download your free copy and explore additional resources designed to support care workers.

Hi, I need your help- Are you someone who works in allied health, support work, support coordination, medical, or uses care or disability support workers for yourself or your child? -
Please take a minute to download this free handout, feel free to use it with your team, I am happy for it to go far and wide.
By answering survey questions afterwards, you'll help others just like you, and shape the future of our workforce. This is for an unpaid quality assurance project, all answers are anonymous and helps me present to my colleagues in August on my findings at the ACCRE emerging leaders forum.

Interesting! Such a great idea.

Why do teenage girls always ask for specific seating in parks?

One of the most common responses we hear when we talk to teenage girls about what would encourage them to use parks more is - seating.

However others may think: “But there are already benches in the park.”

And that’s often true. But simply providing seating isn’t the same as creating places where teenage girls feel comfortable spending time.

When we speak to girls, they tell us that sitting together is often the whole point of visiting the park. It’s where they chat, laugh, decompress, support one another and simply spend time together.

So it’s not just whether there is seating, but what kind of seating and where it’s located. Girls often tell us they value:
-Seating designed for groups, not just individuals.
-Curved or sociable layouts that make conversation easy.
-Places close enough to feel connected to the park, but set back enough not to feel like they’re on display.
- Seating clusters spread out so no one group dominates a space.
- Natural materials, such as timber, that feel warmer and more inviting than cold metal.

There isn’t one perfect solution. Every park and every community is different.
But when girls consistently tell us that they want places to sit together, it’s worth asking whether the seating we provide has really been designed with them in mind. What you find is what works for teenage girls, works for many other people too.

Because creating more inclusive parks isn’t just about adding more benches. It’s about creating places where people feel they belong.
