Food rules can often be disguised as ā€œpreferencesā€ or ā€œjust focusing on health a little bit moreā€. However this can often be a slippery slope to go down.

Even if you have challenged some of your biggest food rules, it can be really common for some other rules to emerge or re-emerge.

This isn’t a sign that you are going backwards, instead it can sometimes be a response to losing some elements of control that you once had surrounding food’.

Especially when we are constantly surrounded by a lot of messaging, information and diet culture- it is expected that we may begin adopting some of these
ā€˜food rules’ or ā€˜disordered patterns’ overtime, even if we don’t mean to.

Because if your eating comes with conditions, negotiations, or quiet rules... it might not be as supportive as you think. If you are met with distress/anxiety, it might be worth working with a team of support who can assist you in this space.

I LOVE having these conversations with clients because part of my role that I love the most is trying to make food experiences not something that needs to feel like a chore, I don’t want it to be unenjoyable, restrictive or unrealistic for individuals to be able to attain.

Food is about so much more than just the nourishment that provides us with, is important for us to also recognise that there are many different reasons why food can be really challenging for us to be able to have or access. This very much advocates for the need for individual individualised support. But it also showcases the reasons why ā€œperfectionā€ isn’t something that should be your goal when it comes to nourishing your body

Recovery isn’t about doing it the ā€œperfectā€ way, instead it’s about meeting yourself where you’re at.

Both are valid, both can be recovery and it is important to be guided by your team!

Let’s talk about the difference between eating an apple when you felt like a chocolate…

Whilst we may have felt somewhat physically full, there’s likely an element of you that felt unsatisfied (which makes sense because you genuinely felt like the chocolate).

The good news is we can often address both of these needs for nourishment and the more times we do this, our body will feel more ā€˜in control’ and safe or neutral surrounding these foods.

Healing your relationship with food often involves facing all levels of hunger 🩵🩵

Today is World Eating Disorder Action Day, and this is a reminder that eating disorders can show up in many ways, including in environments where behaviours are often misunderstood as ā€œdisciplineā€ or ā€œdedication.ā€

Sporting and performance spaces can unintentionally reinforce restrictive patterns around food, movement, and body image. That’s why awareness matters — noticing the signs, opening up conversations, and creating environments where fuelling, rest, and flexibility are supported, not questioned.

Small shifts in how we speak, support, and structure environments can make a meaningful difference in reducing risk and supporting recovery.
