When Strong, Driven Clients Leave You Feeling Stuck
Many practitioners have worked with clients who seem highly capable, articulate and motivated, yet something in the therapeutic process feels unusually difficult.
They may:
• Take control of sessions
• Challenge or correct the practitioner
• Dismiss emotional exploration
• Focus relentlessly on solutions and productivity
• Trigger subtle power struggles or feelings of being "managed"
These clients are often described as controlling, resistant, arrogant, perfectionistic, or even narcissistic.
But what if something else is happening?
In this live 3-hour CPD workshop, we'll explore Unmitigated Agency – a control-based coping pattern where competence, dominance, and over-functioning serve as protection against vulnerability, shame, and perceived weakness.
Rather than viewing these clients through a pathology lens, we'll examine how autonomy threat, status threat, and relational dynamics shape engagement, defensiveness, and emotional accessibility.
What will you learn?
How to recognise unmitigated agency in clinical practice
Why over-control and dominance often emerge under threat
How to prevent subtle power struggles and relational ruptures
Strategies for validating competence without reinforcing over-functioning
Practical de-escalation and micro-repair skills
Ways to expand emotional tolerance without undermining autonomy
This highly interactive workshop includes clinical examples, role-plays, discussion, and practical tools that can be applied immediately in practice.
