You could be taking an iron supplement every single day, and STILL have a deficiency. 🤯

It’s less about how much iron you take, and more about how much your body can actually absorb and use!

Here are 7 simple lifestyle and dietary shifts you can make today to optimise your iron levels:

1. Separate Iron from Coffe & Dairy: Polyphenols in coffee/tea and calcium in dairy can bind to iron, blocking its absorption. Wait at least an hour between your iron source and these potential inhibitors.

2. Cook Meat & Plant Sources Together: Harness the “meat factor” effect! The heme iron in meat actually boosts your body’s ability to absorb the non-heme iron from nearby plants (think beef and lentil stew!)

💡Bonus points for cooking in a cast-iron pan for an extra iron boost!

3. Ferment or Sprout Grains & Legumes: Phytic acid, an anti-nutrient, locks up iron in foods like beans and whole grains. Soaking overnight or sprouting significantly reduces phytic acid, releasing that trapped iron for your body to use.

4. Add a Boost of Vitamin C: This powerful nutrient is a natural iron absorption enhancer for plant based or non heme iron sources! Squeeze lemon over your spinach, or add some peppers to your lentil soup to help your body absorb non-heme iron more efficiently.

This is not necessary for read meat and other heme iron sources as the iron is already better absorbed.

5. Check Your Zinc Supplement Timing: While both essential, high-dose zinc and iron compete for the exact same absorption pathway in your body. If you’re supplementing both, make sure to space them out by several hours to avoid competition.

6. Support Stomach Acid: Your body needs a sufficiently acidic environment to convert iron into an absorbable form. For a natural boost, try a splash of apple c***r vinegar in water before your meals to keep that conversion pathway open.
