The body often knows we are overextending long before the mind admits it.
Recently, I’ve been reflecting on how boundaries are not just mental decisions — they are deeply connected to the body and nervous system too.
For many of us, overextending, over-explaining, constantly pushing through, or struggling to slow down didn’t come from weakness. They often became ways to stay safe, feel accepted, avoid discomfort, maintain control, or keep up with the pressure of life.
But over time, those patterns can become embodied.
We override what we feel.
We ignore our own needs.
We keep going even when the body asks us to slow down.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Metal element speaks to boundaries and discernment — recognising what feels nourishing, what feels draining, and what we no longer need to carry.
Healthy boundaries are less about shutting life out and more about creating the safety to stay connected to ourselves. Not just in relationships with others, but also in the relationship we have with work, rest, time, energy, expectations, and the pace at which we move through life.
Boundaries are less about restriction…and more about creating space to breathe, soften, and listen to ourselves again.
A few things I've been reflecting on lately:
What am I saying yes to that drains my energy?
What actually feels nourishing right now?
Where in life am I overextending myself?
Sometimes boundaries begin with awareness first! 🌱
