27/05/2026

In Classical Chinese Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine and especially Japanese-style moxibustion, Kidney 7 (KI7 / Fuliu) is considered a powerful point for regulating fluids, strengthening Kidney Yang, supporting sweating function, and restoring depleted energy after overwork or chronic exhaustion.

It is often palpated as tender or tight in people with:
fatigue
weak lower back
edema or fluid imbalance
spontaneous sweating or night sweating
coldness and exhaustion
Why rice grain moxa on Kidney 7?
Rice grain moxibustion (tiny direct cones of moxa) is traditionally used to:
Tonify Kidney Yang gently but deeply
Warm the channels without strong needle stimulation
Restore Wei Qi and constitutional strength
Help chronic cold, depletion, burnout, fertility weakness, or recovery states
KI7 is especially valued because it:
regulates opening/closing of pores
supports water metabolism
anchors Yang and circulation
strengthens the body's adaptive energy
Classical indications
Practitioners may use rice grain moxa on KI7 for:
chronic fatigue
cold feet and legs
adrenal exhaustion patterns
menopausal depletion
weak immunity
urinary weakness
excessive sweating or inability to sweat
chronic lower back weakness

When used skillfully, though, it is considered one of the most refined and profound tonification techniques in Japanese and Classical acupuncture traditions.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, applying moxa along the Traditional Chinese Medicine Bladder meridian is considered deeply nourishing and warming, especially for supporting the Kidney system and protecting Yang energy during the cold season.
The Bladder Meridian runs along the entire back and contains many important Back-Shu points connected to the organs. In winter, practitioners often focus on warming this channel to:
strengthen Kidney Yang
dispel Cold and Damp
support immunity and Wei Qi
relieve stiffness, back pain, fatigue, and exhaustion
calm the nervous system
restore depleted energy from overwork.

Shonishin
Tracing its roots back to 17th century Osaka in Japan (and ultimately to ancient China), this
specialized acupuncture technique was developed specifically for infants and children up to the age
of seven. Practitioners insist Shonishin offers a viable alternative to pharmaceuticals in the
treatment of childhood health problems--everything from behavioural and emotional to many
physical conditions.
It has been used with some success in treating infants and children afflicted with
a wide variety of conditions, including colic, indigestion, GERD, constipation, and diarrhea. It has
even shown some success in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD),
allergies, asthma, eczema, hives, bedwetting, and stuttering. Children as young as one month old
have been effectively treated.

To understand how Shonishin works, one must first realize that a child& bio-energetic systems are in
the yang phase and not fully developed, which means their energy (qi) moves very quickly. Due to
their rapidly growing bodies, infants consume large amounts of qi. This often depletes the organs
most responsible for producing qi, which can result in hyperstimulation and offers a fertile ground
for health problems.
Babies are born with very weak digestive systems and sensitive nervous systems. Regular Shonishin
treatments sooth your baby’s nervous system, strengthen their digestive system and help ease and
prevent episodes of colic, gas and acid reflux.

Shoulder pain responds very well to acupuncture and moxibustion, especially when the treatment is tailored to the pattern behind the pain rather than just the location.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, shoulder pain is usually linked to one (or a mix) of these patterns:
1. Qi & Blood Stagnation (most common)
Sharp, fixed pain
Worse with movement or certain positions
Often from strain, injury, or overuse
Treatment:
Acupuncture to move Qi and Blood.
Moxibustion if there’s cold involvement
can be very helpful here
2. Wind-Cold-Damp Invasion
Heavy, aching shoulder
Worse with cold or damp weather
Better with warmth
Treatment:
Moxibustion is key 🔥
3. Liver Qi Stagnation (stress-related tension)
Tight, stiff shoulders (often upper trapezius)
Linked to stress, frustration, emotional holding
Gentle moxa if there’s cold or deficiency
4. Kidney Deficiency (chronic, deeper weakness)
Dull, chronic pain
Weakness in shoulder and arm
Often in older patients or long-term issues

How acupuncture helps
Relaxes muscle tension
Improves blood circulation
Reduces inflammation
Signals the nervous system to reduce pain
How moxibustion helps
Warms the channels
Disperses cold and damp
Deeply nourishes deficiency conditions
Especially effective if pain improves with heat.
Practical tip
If heat makes your shoulder feel better → moxa is likely beneficial
If ice feels better → more heat may not be appropriate initially
