Early intervention can be more effective when families are involved

Early intervention is not only about what happens during therapy sessions. When families actively participate, children have more opportunities to practise and use their skills in everyday life.

A therapist may work with a child on communication, social interaction, play or independence. At home, parents can reinforce these skills naturally through meals, playtime, getting dressed or daily routines.

This consistency helps children understand that the skills they learn are not limited to the therapy setting. They can also be used with the people they know, in familiar places and throughout their everyday lives.

At Viangelic, our Early Intervention classes in Melbourne work alongside families to support children’s development and help families build practical strategies they can continue using at home. 💜

Because meaningful progress happens not only in therapy, but also in the everyday moments shared with family.

From diagnosis to a journey of growth in his own way

When Aston was diagnosed with autism and ADHD at the age of four, his parents faced many worries about his future.

His mother, Naomi Joyce, began documenting Aston’s journey every day. Those diary entries eventually became a book, sharing the joys, challenges and lessons their family experienced along the way.

Today, Aston is a curious, active and outgoing seven-year-old. He enjoys parties, playdates and is attending a mainstream school with the support he needs.

Naomi says early intervention has played an important role in Aston’s development. Through the NDIS, the family was able to access support including occupational therapy, speech therapy and ABA, focusing on the areas where Aston needed the most support.

Naomi’s message to families raising neurodivergent children is simple: every child has their own journey. What works for one child may not work for another, so families need to keep exploring approaches that best suit their child’s individual needs.

Most importantly, recognising a child’s needs early and accessing the right support can create more opportunities for them to develop and thrive.

At Viangelic Early Intervention Centre, we work alongside families to understand each child’s needs and develop individualised support, nurturing every step of their development. 💜

Early intervention is not just about teaching skills. It’s about helping children participate in life.

Early intervention is not only about helping children learn new skills. More importantly, it is about helping them use those skills in everyday situations and gradually become more confident and active participants in daily life.

A communication skill can help a child express what they need.
Learning to take turns can help them join in play with others.
Developing everyday skills such as eating, getting dressed or putting things away can support greater independence.

That is why early intervention does not only happen in the therapy room. The skills children learn need to be connected to family life, play, school and the everyday experiences around them.

At Viangelic, we also offer Early Intervention classes in Melbourne, providing children with opportunities to learn, interact and develop skills in an environment that supports their individual needs.

Because the goal of early intervention is not simply what a child can do during a session. It is about helping them carry those skills into real-life experiences and everyday participation. 💜

EARLY INTERVENTION FOR CHILDREN DOESN’T ONLY HAPPEN IN THE THERAPY ROOM

Early intervention is not limited to the time a child spends working with therapists. The skills a child learns through intervention need opportunities to be practised and reinforced throughout everyday life.

Mealtimes can become opportunities to develop independence and communication.
Playing with parents can encourage turn-taking, imitation and social interaction.
A trip to the supermarket can help a child practise making choices, requesting what they need and adapting to a new environment.
Even everyday routines such as getting dressed, putting toys away or washing hands can support the development of important life skills.

When families, therapists and caregivers work together with consistent strategies, children have more opportunities to use what they have learned in real-life situations — not only during therapy sessions.

Early intervention doesn’t belong to one room.
It continues through everyday activities, meaningful interactions and the little moments that make up a child’s day. 💜

At Viangelic, we work alongside families to support children in developing meaningful skills and participating more confidently in everyday life.

AT 3, SEVERE AUTISM SYMPTOMS — AFTER 9 MONTHS OF EARLY INTERVENTION, SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRESS WAS OBSERVED

A 2024 case study published in Listy klinické logopedie followed a 3-year-old boy diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who participated in an early intervention programme based on the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) for nine months.

Before starting the programme, the child presented with significant autism symptoms, limited communication skills and developmental delays across multiple areas. After nine months of intervention, psychological assessment showed improvements across all developmental domains, while the severity of his autism symptoms was assessed as moderate.

One individual case cannot represent every child with autism, but it highlights an important point: when developmental differences are identified, timely assessment and appropriate early intervention can create more opportunities for children to develop essential skills.

Early intervention is not about focusing on one skill alone. Depending on each child’s needs, intervention may support communication, language, social interaction, play, cognition and everyday adaptive skills.

Because every child has different strengths and needs, finding professional assessment and an intervention programme tailored to the individual child is an important step for families.

💜 At Viangelic, we support families throughout the early intervention journey, with programmes designed around each child’s individual needs, strengths and developmental goals. # supportathome------------

A WOMAN BORN WITHOUT ARMS SWIMS 20.4KM AND SETS A GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

On 21 August 2025, Kerry-Lee Gockel completed a swim around Great Keppel Island, also known as Wop-pa, off the coast of Yeppoon, Queensland, Australia.

The 20.4km journey was not only the longest distance Gockel had ever completed. It also earned her a Guinness World Records title for the longest swim in the AA3 disability category.

Born without arms due to a rare congenital condition, Gockel swims backstroke, using her legs to propel herself and maintain balance throughout the journey. Along the way, her support swimmer, Joep Buijs, stayed by her side to assist when needed and provide her with water and food to help maintain her energy.

Gockel’s journey into long-distance swimming began in 2005, when her coach James encouraged her to give the sport a try. On her first open-water swim, she completed 1km.

From that milestone, 1km gradually became 10km, then 15km during training. Before taking on Great Keppel, Gockel had completed three 10km swims. In 2024, she and her husband Paul also completed a 10km relay swim around the island, taking turns to swim 1km each.

One year later, she returned to Great Keppel to complete the entire 20.4km journey.

For Gockel, the appeal of open-water swimming lies in the fact that no two swims are ever exactly the same. Every journey brings a new challenge, new conditions and a new limit to push beyond.

HOW CAN PARENTS TALK TO THEIR CHILDREN TO SUPPORT LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT?

For children experiencing language and communication difficulties, everyday interactions can create valuable opportunities to understand, imitate and use language purposefully.

Here are some simple strategies parents can try at home:

01. Follow your child’s interests
Talk about what your child is already looking at or playing with. This helps connect words with meaningful experiences.

02. Use language at your child’s level
Keep your language clear and simple. When your child uses a single word, add one or two words to build on it.

For example
“Car” → “Car goes” → “Car goes fast”.

03. Create opportunities to communicate
Offer choices or create natural pauses instead of immediately anticipating every need. This encourages your child to request, choose, refuse or seek attention.

04. Give your child time to respond
After speaking or asking a question, pause and allow your child time to process and respond. Their response may be a gesture, sound, word or sentence.

05. Expand on what your child says
Repeat what your child says and add a little more information to model the next level of language.

For example
“Eat biscuit” → “Eat a biscuit” → “I eat a biscuit”.

06. Make everyday moments count
Mealtimes, play, bath time, getting dressed and outings can all become opportunities to practise vocabulary, following instructions, turn-taking and functional communication.

💜 The goal is not simply to help children say more words, but to help them communicate meaningfully and effectively.

At Viangelic, Speech Therapy is tailored to each child’s communication skills and individual needs, with families involved throughout the process to support progress in everyday life.

Every interaction can be an opportunity to communicate, connect and grow.

AHA / THERAPY ASSISTANT – SUPPORTING CHILDREN THROUGH EVERY STEP

An AHA / Therapy Assistant works alongside therapists to help children practise and build important skills through structured therapy activities.

At Viangelic, our Therapy Assistants support children with movement, communication, language and everyday living skills. They follow the therapy program, observe each child’s progress and share updates with the supervising therapist.

Most importantly, they provide consistent encouragement and support, helping children stay engaged and confident throughout each session.

Small steps can make a meaningful difference. Viangelic is here to support every step of the journey.
