This determined patient suffered from a stroke 3 years ago. As most are aware- patients are often informed improvements post stroke are usually not achievable after 12-18 months.
He started sessions at KB 4 months ago with around 20 degrees shoulder flexion.

Today- he demonstrated 120 degrees passive shoulder flexion (an increase of 100 degrees!!!!) and he is now able to assist in vacuuming his home, bringing the bin in plus more ADL's.

This is huge- in both confidence and quality of life.
And it proves that improvements can continue well past specific time frames in some cases.

Grip Strength πŸ’ͺ β€” it tells us more than you might think!

Grip strength is much more than being able to open a stubborn jar! It is a simple, quick and objective measure that can provide valuable information about overall strength, physical function and health.

This week I measured grip strength amongst some of my patients and group members β€” and I was super impressed with the results!

In one particular exercise class, 7 out of 9 group members had grip strength in the β€œstrong” range! πŸ’ͺπŸ™Œ

The other two group members had only recently started attending my group and were new to regular exercise.

While we weren't specifically training grip strength, the majority of this group had developed strong grip strength through regular exercise, particularly resistance training.

This is a great reminder that you don't necessarily need to perform specific grip-strength exercises to improve your grip. Getting stronger through regular resistance training can have benefits that carry over into everyday function.

Why does grip strength matter?

πŸ’ͺ It provides an indication of upper-body and overall muscle strength
πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ Lower grip strength is associated with falls, frailty and future functional decline
🦴 It is linked with bone health and fracture risk
🧠 It has associations with cognitive health and wellbeing
πŸ«€It can provide valuable information about cardiovascular and general health
πŸ₯ In older adults, lower grip strength is associated with poorer health outcomes
⭐ It can also be used as part of the assessment for conditions such as sarcopenia β€” age-related loss of muscle mass and strength.

Grip strength can also tell us something about how we're ageing. Declining strength can eventually make everyday tasks such as carrying shopping, opening jars, using tools or turning a door handle much harder.

And the really positive part? Strength is something we can work on! πŸ’ͺ

I even measured my own grip strength this week β€” and as you can see in the photo, mine sits in the average–strong range! πŸ™Œ

So, have you checked your grip strength lately?!

Atrial Fibrillation-

Some education on a cardiac rhythm that is quite common- in particular more prevalent with age, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, alcohol use and more common in endurance athletes!

I see many patients whom are not symptomatic and others who may present with shortness of breath or report palpitations.

My biggest concern of prolonged AF is stroke or heart failure- these can be avoided if screened/AF is picked up early.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an irregular, fast heartbeat that increases stroke risk. Learn about symptoms, causes, treatment, and prevention.

The role of an Exercise Physiologist is often misunderstood. We do so much more than simply prescribe exercise or run exercise classes. We can play a vital role in identifying health issues, reducing risk and potentially even saving lives.

Today was a powerful reminder of exactly why our role matters.

While checking a patient's ECG using my two-lead ECG machine, I identified a rhythm consistent with Atrial Fibrillation (AF).

I recommended the patient attend their GP or local Emergency Department for further assessment with a 12-lead ECG. They attended their local ED with the ECG recording I had provided β€” and it confirmed what we had suspected: they were in AF and required anticoagulant medication.

Medication started. βœ…
AF identified. βœ…
Stroke risk reduced. βœ…

This is about so much more than exercise.

It is about looking at the whole person, recognising when something isn't right, knowing when to act, and working alongside other health professionals to help keep our patients safe.

Early identification and intervention can make an enormous difference.

Prevention is better than a cure β€” and sometimes, exercise physiology is about much more than exercise.

Keep an eye out for my next post, where I'll explain more about Atrial Fibrillation, what it means and why it matters.
