Media Submission Statement
On 24 December 2024, an incident occurred at Cabramatta Leisure Centre involving the safety of my three children.
I observed a man behaving suspiciously, repeatedly using his phone in close proximity to my children while they were showering, and peeking at them. After monitoring the situation, I confronted him, took possession of his phone, and detained him in the changing room while awaiting police.
Despite requesting assistance five times, the lifeguard completely ignored me and refused to call the police. I was ultimately forced to contact police myself after dressing my children. The response later provided by management and the Fairfield Mayor was that contacting police was not their responsibility, and that the role of lifeguards was limited to water safety, NOT calling the police.
Police attended shortly thereafter and took the man into custody. He was subsequently charged with multiple offences relating to filming minors, possession of inappropriate material, and msturbating in front of my children.
From 24 December 2024 to 29 April 2026, the matter went through at least five adjourned court hearings. The case proceeded through Fairfield Local Court, where the individual was granted bail on 14 March 2025 and remained in the community pending the proceedings from 14/3/2025 to 29/4/2026.
On 29 April 2026, he was convicted. The court imposed a 36-month suspended sentence with no custodial term, instead ordering home curfew, with medical considerations noted during sentencing.
He claimed leniency based on heart and neurological conditions, which I find difficult to reconcile given the nature of the conduct. Moreover, the fact that he lived only 100 metres from Cabramatta West Public School raises serious concerns about the risk to young children and his proximity to vulnerable individuals. This points to deliberate, calculated planning that enabled his conduct.
This case raises broader concerns about public safety, the responsibilities of facility staff in emergency situations, bail conditions, and sentencing outcomes in matters involving children.
I am submitting this statement to highlight these concerns and to encourage greater accountability, clearer protocols, and stronger protections for children in public spaces.
