When I think of legumes, I think of fibre, protein and iron! These would be one of the most convenient and nutritious pantry staples. As the weather warms up, try to add more legumes in your salads and stir-frys. They also make a great hearty addition to soups or casseroles. Legumes can also act as a meat alternative on certain days of the week, particularly for those looking to lower their total cholesterol levels. I personally love the endless options, with chickpeas being my favourite (as they are not so mushy!)

Breakfast provides the greatest opportunity for you to consume most of your fibre! Remember to increase your fibre gradually so that you limit excess bloating and discomfort. In addition, a high fluid intake is needed so that your stool stays soft. Try to stay active so that your stool can move through your digestive system with ease.

Incorporating various fibre sources is vital for the development of good bacteria in the bowel. Some great examples include:

1. Soluble Fibre: oats, psyllium husk, legumes, flesh of fruits and vegetables (e.g. bananas, oranges, pears, okra and peas), barley and seeds

2. Insoluble Fibre:skin and seeds of fruits and vegetables (apples, persimmon, carrot and mushrooms), wholegrain products (e.g. bread), nuts, seeds, wheat bran and rice bran.

3. Resistant Starch: cooked and cooled grains (e.g. rice, quinoa, pasta and potato), unripe bananas, legumes, oats and freekeh.

Some of these swaps may be surprising to some! High GI foods break down and get absorbed in the blood much quicker than low GI foods. Hence, when you eat a high GI food then your sugar levels will increase more rapidly. Additionally, low GI foods will help you maintain more consistent energy levels to get you through the day. Some research shows that low GI foods may also help with hot flushes for women going through menopause!

Hormonal changes will definitely impact your body shape. It is important to maintain regular eating habits and stay active so that your fitness levels remain high. Excess alcohol may cause other health complications such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and digestive problems. Try not to build detrimental habits!

As fat builds up in the liver and muscles, these tissues become less responsive to insulin.  This test therefore draws awareness and caution as it is associated with serious health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and infertility in women. In the absence of insulin resistance, then your HOMA-IR result would be less than 1.0. Early insulin resistance displays a HOMA-IR result above 1.9, whilst significant insulin resistance shows a result above 2.9.

Menopause is when the female body stops producing estrogen and releasing an egg every month (also known as menstruation). Hence, symptoms arise such as hot flushes, mood swings, fatigue, vaginal dryness, and sleep disturbances. Hormone therapy may be therefore used to overcome these, as estrogen is taken to counteract the natural drop, which occurs in menopause. However, taking estrogen for a prolonged period of time may increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, or breast or uterine cancers.

Thus, many turn to natural alternatives such as soy to manage their menopause symptoms. This is because soy contains isoflavones, which have some estrogen-like effects. However, greater research is needed to assess the effectiveness of soy for the treatment of menopausal symptoms.

Interestingly, soy is high in fibre, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, which can, therefore, benefit your body in many ways.

Vegemite is a great source of the B group vitamins. It is marketed for its great source of:

-Vitamin B1: needed for brain function
-Vitamin B2: supports the nervous system
-Vitamin B3: required for energy release
-Folate: reduces the risk of fatigue

It is important to note that Vegemite is not gluten free, as it contains barley and wheat. It is however suitable for vegetarians. Each teaspoon (i.e. 5 grams) contains 50% of the % daily intake for thiamin (vitamin B1) and folate (vitamin B9) and 25% of the % daily intake for riboflavin (vitamin B2) and niacin (vitamin B3).
