As Pride Month comes to a close, we’re ending with an important but often overlooked topic in same-sex female health: prevalent/recurrent BV. 🌈

Research suggests that women with female partners may experience higher rates of BV recurrence because vaginal microbiomes can influence each other through sexual contact.

A healthy vaginal microbiome is usually dominated by Lactobacillus bacteria, which help maintain a low pH and protect against harmful microbes. But BV-associated bacteria like Gardnerella vaginalis can disrupt this balance - and may be transferred between partners, contributing to recurrence in some cases.

Understanding the vaginal microbiome helps shift the conversation away from blame and toward better care, maintenance and treatment approaches!!

A common signifier of BV is strong, FISH(y) v*ginal odour. This is often accompanied by thin grey or white, watery discharge ✨✨

No ever talks about the constant fear that the person standing next to you can smell it. The way it makes you want to cancel plans, shrink away from intimacy, or spend hours scrubbing in the shower (which, ironically, only makes it worse). ⁠⁠

The stigma makes us feel isolated, but the reality is that BV is the most common v*ginal imbalance out there. It’s not about being “dirty,” and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s just bacteria doing what bacteria does when the pH gets thrown off. ⁠🙌🏼🙌🏼
