National Breast Cancer Foundation Since our inception in 1994, NBCF have invested around $200M into more than 600 world-class research projects across Australia.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is Australia's leading not-for-profit organisation funding world-class breast cancer research towards our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer. In this time, death rates from breast cancer in Australia have reduced by over 40%. We’ve seen remarkable results, but the job’s not done. At NBCF, we’re determined to create a better tomorrow. We know research matters, and it is central and critical to improving breast cancer outcomes. Through our grant schemes, we fund the very best breast cancer research in Australia– from fundamental biological research to clinical research via an open national, competitive and rigorous peer review process. This means we award grants by order of merit to the finest breast cancer research in alignment with our vision of Zero Deaths from breast cancer. As a completely community-funded organisation, NBCF’s ability to support game-changing breast cancer research relies on the generosity of the Australian public.

🔬 What is metastatic breast cancer?

Metastatic breast cancer, also known as advanced or stage 4 (IV) breast cancer, occurs when breast cancer spreads from the breast to other parts of the body, most commonly the bones, liver, lungs or brain.

While treatment advances have helped more people live better and longer with metastatic breast cancer, this late-stage of the disease remains a major challenge and causes the majority of breast cancer-related deaths.

💗 That's why researchers like Professor Belinda Parker, who is co-funded by the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and the Mother's Day Classic Foundation, are working to better understand how metastatic breast cancer cells evade the immune system and find new ways to help the body recognise and attack them.

Our Unfinished Stories campaign highlights the need for breakthroughs that will help more people reach life's most important milestones.

How can we help the immune system better recognise and attack metastatic breast cancer?

🔬 Professor Belinda Parker and her team at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre are investigating new ways to help the immune system recognise and attack metastatic breast cancer cells.

Co-funded by the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Mother's Day Classic, the team is testing promising new approaches to expose these cells, strengthen immune responses and deliver engineered immune cells directly to metastatic tumour sites.

This research has the potential to unlock more effective immunotherapies for metastatic breast cancer, improve outcomes for people living with the disease and give more people the chance to finish their story. 💗

For 2 years, mum lived with metastatic breast cancer with incredible strength, determination and hope. We made new memories wherever we could, but there were so many moments still ahead of her: retirement years, more family holidays and more time with the people she loved." 🩷

💗 What a day. What a community. What an impact.

Hundreds of passionate supporters came together for the 19th annual Pink Ribbon Cup Raceday, united by a shared goal: funding life-saving breast cancer research.

Thanks to the incredible dedication of Robyn, the committee, volunteers, sponsors, partners and everyone who attended, this remarkable event has already raised more than $200,000 for breast cancer research this year, with fundraising still continuing.

For 19 years, the Pink Ribbon Cup has brought people together to make a difference, and year after year, this community continues to show the power of collective action.
