Why This Conference Matters to General Practice
Musculoskeletal presentations are an integral part of everyday General Practice.
The GP is frequently the first point of clinical assessment and remains central to the patient's journey—from initial diagnosis and investigation through conservative management, pain management, recognition of red flags, referral and coordination of multidisciplinary care.
Effective musculoskeletal care therefore requires more than knowledge of an individual joint or condition.
It requires sound clinical reasoning and an understanding of when to investigate, when to manage conservatively, when an intervention may be appropriate, and when specialist or allied-health referral is required.
The AAMA Medical Conference 2026 has been designed around precisely this multidisciplinary approach.
Across one day, GPs will hear perspectives from Orthopaedic Surgeons, Sports Medicine, Physiotherapy and Hand Therapy, Geriatric Medicine, Interventional Radiology and Emergency Medicine, providing an opportunity to consider musculoskeletal care across the continuum from the General Practice consultation to specialist assessment and intervention.
Practical Topics for the Consulting Room
The program addresses a broad range of presentations encountered regularly in primary care, including:
- The Painful Shoulder & Elbow — a practical approach to diagnosis and management
Common Lower-Limb Presentations — practical diagnosis and management
- Non-Surgical Management of Lumbar-Sacral Pain
- Clinical Shoulder Assessment — evidence-based special tests, their accuracy and limitations, and clinical reasoning
- Management of Hand & Wrist Injuries in Clinical Practice
- Pain in Older People — causes, assessment and management
- Interventional Musculoskeletal Radiology
- Knee Osteoarthritis — a comparative review of hyaluronic acid, corticosteroid, PRP and total knee arthroplasty
- Musculoskeletal Red Flags: When to Refer
- Clinical Q&A, case discussion and a multidisciplinary panel discussion.
What Can GPs Gain From Attending?
The conference is intended to provide education that can translate directly into day-to-day clinical practice.
For General Practitioners, it is an opportunity to refresh and strengthen musculoskeletal assessment skills, review contemporary management approaches, improve confidence in identifying presentations requiring escalation, and better understand the available specialist, imaging, interventional and allied-health pathways.
It also provides something particularly valuable in General Practice: the opportunity to hear different disciplines address related clinical problems within the same educational setting.
Understanding what happens before and after a referral can help improve referral quality, communication between clinicians, continuity of care and, ultimately, patient outcomes.
RACGP Continuing Professional Development
The conference also provides an opportunity for GPs to incorporate relevant educational participation into their ongoing professional development.
Where applicable, RACGP members can self-record eligible learning activities through their myCPD account, recording the relevant activity and hours in accordance with RACGP CPD requirements.
Participants should record their learning according to their individual CPD circumstances and applicable RACGP requirements.
This provides an additional opportunity to ensure that time devoted to clinically relevant education contributes towards your annual professional development requirements.
More Than a Conference — An Opportunity to Connect
Good multidisciplinary care depends not only upon clinical knowledge, but also upon effective professional relationships.
The conference provides an opportunity to meet and engage with colleagues from different disciplines, exchange clinical perspectives, participate in case discussions, strengthen professional networks and connect with clinicians involved in the referral and management pathways of our patients.
Attendees will also have opportunities throughout the day to network with colleagues and engage with conference sponsors and their services.
COMPLIMENTARY ATTENDANCE
AAMA has organised this conference for the benefit of our medical community, and attendance is complimentary.
As places are limited, advance RSVP is essential to assist with catering and conference planning. Also because places are limited.
