A diagnosis may explain some of the changes a person is experiencing, but it does not define who they are.

Their history, relationships, preferences, humour and identity remain important.

This Friday, pause and ask:

Who is this person, and what matters to them?

For people living with dementia, including Younger Onset Dementia, meaningful support begins by seeing and valuing the whole person.

Access opens the door. Belonging is about what happens once someone is inside.

It means being invited to participate, having a voice, building meaningful relationships and being valued for what you contribute.

Creating inclusive environments does not always require major change. Often, small and intentional actions can make the greatest difference.

Our latest article explores how we can move beyond accessibility and help create communities where everyone feels welcomed, respected and connected.

Every child deserves to feel that they belong at school.

Friendships help children feel accepted, build confidence, regulate emotions and develop important skills such as communication, empathy and problem solving.

For some children, particularly those with ASD, ADHD, anxiety, language delays or emotional regulation difficulties, making and keeping friends can require additional support.

Our latest article shares practical ways parents and carers can help, including:

Talking about friendships in positive ways
Practising social situations at home
Encouraging shared interests
Building emotional awareness
Working in partnership with the school

Children do not need a large friendship group. Even one trusted friend can make a meaningful difference.

When someone’s nervous system is overwhelmed, even a simple request can feel difficult.

Before asking for communication, participation or problem-solving, it can help to pause and consider whether the person feels safe and regulated enough to respond.

This Friday, ask:

What might help this person feel safer before we ask them to do more?

Less pressure, greater predictability and calm connection can make a meaningful difference.

The brain and body are not separate. What we think, feel and experience can influence our energy, sleep, digestion and sense of safety.

For many autistic people, the nervous system may operate in an almost constant state of alert as it processes sensory input, unpredictability and social expectations.

In the latest Tharon’s Thoughts article, Tharon explores how experiences including stimming, masking, shutdown, restraint collapse and the need for solitude can reflect the nervous system’s attempt to regulate and find balance.

When we understand what may be happening beneath the surface, we can respond with greater curiosity, compassion and acceptance.

Inclusion begins with an invitation.

Belonging grows when people are not only present, but welcomed, listened to and supported to participate.

A simple invitation to join an activity, conversation or shared experience can help someone move from feeling like an observer to feeling like a valued part of the group.

This Friday, consider:

Who might be waiting to be invited in?

Small acts of connection can have a lasting impact.

Dementia may change how a person communicates, but it does not take away their identity, humanity or right to meaningful connection.

After attending the International Dementia Conference 2026, helpz Behaviour Support Practitioners Monica Cachia and Tracy Cutler reflected on the importance of seeing behaviour as communication.

Rather than asking, “How do we stop this?”, a wellbeing-led approach asks, “What is this person telling us, and how can we respond?”

Our latest article explores why the whole person must remain at the centre of dementia support, including their comfort, safety, identity, relationships, autonomy and environment.

Choice can be found in everyday moments.

It might be choosing what to wear, helping prepare a meal, deciding how to spend the afternoon or taking part in a familiar household task.

Active Support is about finding the right level of assistance so each person can participate in their own way.

This Friday, consider: Are we creating opportunities for participation, or automatically doing things for the person we support?

Everyday involvement can build skills, confidence and a stronger sense of purpose.

Meaningful Engagement and Active Support create opportunities for people to:

✅ Build and maintain skills
✅ Make meaningful choices
✅ Strengthen confidence
✅ Connect with others
✅ Experience greater purpose and belonging

From helping to prepare a meal to joining a community activity or pursuing a personal interest, small moments of participation can make a meaningful difference.
