Psychological safety at work doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s built through leadership, communication, awareness and culture.
This week I’ve been delivering bespoke Mental Health and Psychosocial Hazard training for leaders — real conversations around workplace pressure, burnout, difficult conversations, emotional regulation, bullying, stress, psychological safety and how leaders respond when people are struggling.
Because the reality is:
Most leaders are promoted for technical skill, not people capability.
Yet under pressure, the way leaders communicate can either build trust… or break it.
After more than 30 years working in corporate environments in national roles, I’ve seen firsthand the impact psychologically unsafe workplaces can have on people, teams and organisational culture. I’ve also worked in Crisis Counselling with Lifeline Australia, supporting people in moments of significant distress and vulnerability.
Both experiences deeply shaped why I do this work.
The organisations doing this well understand that mentally healthy workplaces are not just good for people — they are good for business too.
Safer teams.
Better retention.
Earlier intervention.
More confident leaders.
Healthier workplace culture.
And with psychosocial hazards now a major focus under WHS legislation, this training is no longer a “nice to have.”
It’s essential.
I absolutely love this work because when leaders learn how to create psychologically safe environments, the ripple effect across teams is powerful.
People perform better when they feel safe, valued and supported.
If your organisation is serious about leadership capability, psychological safety and creating a mentally healthier workplace culture — let’s have a conversation.
The cost of doing nothing is often the people you can’t afford to lose.
