The Manual Assessment of Respiratory Motion (the MARM) - it's a simple and very effective assessment tool, very useful for assessing breathing pattern.

It does need some initial guidance to get the feel, then it's just practice

What a satisfying weekend in my Melbourne workshop... to be working with such enthusiastic practitioners, helping them learn to effectively apply the MARM, and to free up breathing with the Breathing Muscle Rest protocol.

Can fast breathing reduce anxiety? Surprisingly, yes.

While fast breathing is often linked to stress, when done in a controlled, structured way, it may actually help rewire stress responses and improve mood.
Fast-breathing techniques that cycle through various patterns from active to more relaxed are thought to help because they provide a type of controlled challenge that can help to reset the brains response to stress.

📚 We're excited to share the translation of the Self Evaluation of Breathing Questionnaire ( ) into Danish, a tool I developed and validated during my PhD. This questionnaire is now being recommended to Danish physiotherapists as a valuable resource for identifying dysfunctional breathing patterns.

The study highlights its utility and importance in assessing breathing function, helping professionals make more informed decisions in their treatment approaches.

We highly encourage IBT students and professionals in related fields to explore this article and consider how this tool can enhance their practice.

Research is increasingly showing that specific breathing techniques, whether slow and gentle or structured and energising, can profoundly influence how we feel, think and function.
But here’s the key: there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. The most effective breath practices are the ones that are tailored to you: your body, your history, your nervous system.
🌿 At , we take a whole-person approach grounded in science.
Breathing well isn’t just about relaxing. It’s about rewiring, regulating and restoring from within.

How can help manage stress and improve health? 🤔

is a significant factor in physical and mental health, leading to chronic illnesses and psychological distress. Stress can be categorized into good, tolerable, and toxic, with toxic stress causing the most harm.
The body's stress response system, including the CNS, SAM axis, and HPA axis, helps manage stress but can be overwhelmed by chronic stress, leading to allostatic load and health issues.
are effective tools for managing stress. (IBT) offers a structured approach to correct dysfunctional breathing and reduce stress. Various breathing practices, such as slow-paced breathing, mindful breathing, and CO2 tolerance training, can help regulate the stress response system, improve resilience, and enhance overall health.

Managing stress involves identifying and reducing stressors, improving the function of the stress response system through lifestyle changes and therapies, and increasing stress resilience through controlled exposure to stressors.

Personalized approaches to breathing therapy are recommended for optimal results, especially for individuals with complex medical conditions.

📄 New research shows the power of comprehensive breathing protocols based on (IBT) principles for patients with dysfunctional breathing and medically unexplained symptoms.
Led by , a medical doctor and certified IBT practitioner, this pilot study evaluated a 5-week breathing retraining program for patients with medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) and dysfunctional breathing.

👏 Congratulations Dr Svenningsen for this important contribution to the field of breathing science.
