R U OK? Day exists because looking okay and being okay aren’t the same thing, and that gap is easiest to hide in the person who never stops moving.
High-functioning can be its own disguise. Someone can get everything done, show up for everyone else, and rarely ask for anything back, and still be struggling underneath it. Being busy can actually make it harder for the people around them to notice.
So, when you ask, “are you okay,” leave space for the real answer. If it’s no, you don’t have to fix it. Just listen, and don’t rush the silence. Someone might need a moment to find words for something they’ve been holding for a while.
One conversation isn’t always enough either. Checking in again later can matter just as much.
Think of the person in your life who always seems to have it together. Today’s a good day to ask twice.
