Yesterday I made some borla and pom pom ties.
Borlas and pom poms have long been used throughout South American Andean traditions as symbols of protection, blessing, identity, fertility, abundance, and gratitude.
More than a decoration, they carry cultural and spiritual significance, with colours and patterns often reflecting family lineage, community belonging, personal stories, intention and prayers.
They are associated with life force, vitality, and prosperity, while the act of creating them is considered an offering of time, intention, and respect.
When used to adorn, borlas and pom poms become more than ornaments, they imbue the item, space or instrument with beauty, meaning, and presence.
They serve as a reflection of the intentions and prayers, transforming, in this case my drum into a unique expression of relationship and living culture.
Each tassel (borla) and pom pom carries its own story, honouring the spirit of the instrument and the songs, prayers, and wisdom it is called to carry.
