Yesterday I made some borla and pom pom ties.

Borlas and pom poms have long been used throughout South American Andean traditions as symbols of protection, blessing, identity, fertility, abundance, and gratitude.

More than a decoration, they carry cultural and spiritual significance, with colours and patterns often reflecting family lineage, community belonging, personal stories, intention and prayers.

They are associated with life force, vitality, and prosperity, while the act of creating them is considered an offering of time, intention, and respect.

When used to adorn, borlas and pom poms become more than ornaments, they imbue the item, space or instrument with beauty, meaning, and presence.

They serve as a reflection of the intentions and prayers, transforming, in this case my drum into a unique expression of relationship and living culture.

Each tassel (borla) and pom pom carries its own story, honouring the spirit of the instrument and the songs, prayers, and wisdom it is called to carry.

Dear Sisters,

It is a time to gather, to remember, to share our hearts in prayer and the rhythm of the drum around Grandfather fire.

Join Aunty Tara and I, for a deeply nourishing drum, voice, and connection circle. This is a remembering of rhythm and prayer, sound and soul.

Together we will learn and share traditional temazcal songs while honoring the elements and directions. We will reconnect with rhythm, breath, and body, opening our voices in a safe and supported space, and feeling the power of community and ceremony.

The drum is the heartbeat beneath our feet, and the songs are the stories carried through time.

There are moments when something enters your life and you just feel it deep in your body, your bones, your spirit. This is one of those moments for me.

I feel so incredibly blessed to now be the guardian of this beautiful Grandmother Drum that is on her way to me.

A few months ago I had a dream where I was singing in my native tongue and playing a grandmother drum with other women. I’ve been wishing, longing, and quietly praying for it for some time. Spirit even guided me to collaborate with a beautiful Sister to share spanish and medicine songs for the Temazcal next month, but little did I know what was coming.

By what felt like pure coincidence (nothing is by the way) a Grandmother drum was offered to me by my retiring frame drum maker who made and cared for her for years.

A Grandmother Drum is more than just an instrument.
Traditionally, these large, shared drums are played by a group of people sitting around them, each person with a be**er, each heartbeat joining as one. The drum represents the heartbeat of Mother Earth. She is steady, rhythmic, unifying. The name “Grandmother” speaks to her spirit. She is wise, ancient, nurturing, and deeply grounding.

These drums have roots in many Indigenous cultures including my own, where drumming and song are central to ceremony, healing, and community connection. She will become a centre point of our circle. Not just something we play, but something we gather with to share and unite. She invites us to soften, to find our voice, and to remember we are not singing alone.

She’ll now be joining all of our future drum circles, and ceremonies. I can’t wait for you to sit with her, sing with her, and feel what unfolds when we come together in her rhythm and receive her medicine.

I'm still smiling that spirit sent her to me, to be her guardian.
