🌿 PCOS HAS A NEW NAME—AND IT’S ABOUT TIME

Polycystic O***y Syndrome is now being renamed **Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)**.

Why does the name matter?

The term “polycystic ovaries” has always been misleading. The structures seen on an ultrasound are follicles—not true ovarian cysts—and some women with the condition do not have this appearance at all.

More importantly, PMOS was never simply an ovarian or fertility condition.

It can affect:

✨ Menstrual cycles and ovulation
✨ Androgen levels, acne and unwanted hair growth
✨ Insulin regulation and metabolic health
✨ Cholesterol and cardiovascular risk
✨ Fertility and pregnancy
✨ Sleep and energy
✨ Emotional wellbeing and body image

The new name recognises what women and experienced practitioners have understood for years: this is a complex endocrine and metabolic condition requiring individualised, whole-person care.

Nutrition and lifestyle support can play an important role—but PMOS is not caused by poor eating, lack of willpower or a failure to lose weight. It can affect women in bodies of every size.

Effective care may include:

• Thorough hormonal and metabolic assessment
• Personalised nutrition
• Appropriate resistance and aerobic exercise
• Sleep and stress support
• Medical treatment where indicated
• Ongoing monitoring of reproductive and long-term metabolic health

You may continue to see both names while healthcare systems make the transition:

**PMOS—previously known as PCOS.**

A better name will not solve every gap in women’s healthcare, but it is an important step toward better understanding, earlier diagnosis and more complete care.

NORMAL TSH… BUT STILL NOT FEELING WELL?

A recent systematic review found that some people with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis continue to experience fatigue, poor concentration, mood changes and reduced quality of life—even when their TSH is within range or they are taking thyroid medication.

This does not mean every ongoing symptom is caused by Hashimoto’s, or that thyroid antibodies should become the only focus.
It means we may need to look at the whole clinical picture, including:
• Iron and ferritin
• Vitamin B12 and folate
• Vitamin D and other nutrient deficiencies
• Sleep quality and stress
• Blood-sugar regulation and adequate energy intake
• Coeliac disease and digestive health
• Other autoimmune conditions
• Thyroid medication timing, absorption and dosage

The important message?
A “normal” thyroid result should not be used to dismiss persistent symptoms—but reducing antibody numbers alone is not the same as improving someone’s health.

Evidence-informed thyroid care combines appropriate medical treatment with personalised nutrition, lifestyle support and investigation of the other factors contributing to fatigue.

If your thyroid tests look acceptable but you still don’t feel like yourself, a broader assessment may be worthwhile.

🌿 Creatine after menopause—what does the research actually show?

Creatine is often associated with athletes and bodybuilders, but emerging research suggests it may also have a useful role in supporting women after menopause.

A 2026 review of seven clinical trials involving 608 postmenopausal women found that creatine may help support:

✨ Lean muscle mass
✨ Lower-body strength
✨ Healthy ageing and physical function

The most meaningful benefits were seen when women used at least 5 g of creatine monohydrate daily together with resistance training.

Importantly, creatine did not significantly improve bone density. It should not be promoted as an osteoporosis treatment or used in place of weight-bearing and resistance exercise.

My practitioner takeaway:

Creatine may be a worthwhile addition for suitable midlife and postmenopausal women—but it works best as part of a complete plan that includes adequate protein, resistance training and individualised nutrition.

People with kidney disease or complex medical conditions should seek professional advice before commencing supplementation.

5 signs your thyroid may be slowing down

The thyroid plays a major role in metabolism, energy production, and hormone balance.

When thyroid function becomes sluggish, symptoms may include:

• persistent fatigue
• unexplained weight gain
• hair thinning
• feeling cold easily
• brain fog

Many women experience these symptoms for years without understanding the root cause.

If this resonates with you and you would like support, feel free to DM me. I’m always happy to guide you in the right direction.
