Rumination is a cycle of repetitive negative feedback loop of thought in which the mind continually revisits distressing thoughts, emotions, or situations without moving toward resolution. Research suggests that women, on average, experience higher rates of rumination than men, which is associated with an increased vulnerability to anxiety and depression.
From both psychological and Traditional Chinese Medicine perspectives, interrupting this cycle is essential. While psychology focuses on cognitive and emotional regulation, Chinese Medicine views persistent rumination as disrupting the harmonious flow of Qi, particularly affecting the Spleen and Heart systems, which are closely linked to thought, emotional processing, and mental wellbeing.
Recognising rumination is the first step. Cultivating awareness, emotional regulation, restorative sleep, movement, mindfulness, and appropriate therapeutic support can help shift the mind from repetitive thinking toward resilience and clarity.
