SCHEDULED: From Beverley’s perspective as a Senior Consultant in our Hospital Division, locum work is increasingly being considered for reasons beyond career development alone.

In her conversations with clinicians, it is often framed as a practical response to workload pressure, limited flexibility, or the need for greater control over day-to-day practice.

That shift reflects a broader change in how some clinicians are evaluating sustainability in their careers.

Locum work may not be the right path for everyone, but for those who suit it, it can offer a more balanced way to keep working well.

Shift gaps create pressure fast.

They can impact team workload, continuity of care, and how well a service keeps moving day to day.

That is why reliable staffing support matters when pressure starts to build.

At DNA, we help services respond quickly with support that keeps care moving.

Adventure is a big part of the appeal in locum work, but it is not the only reason it matters.

The other part is service.

Rural locum roles often take clinicians into communities and healthcare settings where their support can have an immediate and visible impact.

That combination of fresh experience and meaningful contribution is what makes the work feel so rewarding.

At DNA Healthcare, we help clinicians find locum opportunities that offer both a change of scene and a clear sense of purpose.

Ready for a locum opportunity that brings together adventure and impact? We would love to hear from you!

Credentialing, compliance, coordination, and communication are a big part of how we work at DNA.

They help us move placements forward with more structure, reduce avoidable pressure, and keep everyone better informed throughout the process.

When those fundamentals are handled well, the difference is often felt from the very start

That is why we continue to place so much value on getting them right.

We are excited to welcome Julia Federico to DNA!

Julia, who has recently joined DNA Healthcare as our Senior Logistics & Operations Co‑Ordinator. She will play a key role in helping ensure our logistics and internal operations run smoothly, supporting the team behind the scenes to keep everything on track day to day.

Julia brings experience across a range of industries, most recently spending two years in operations at one of Australia’s largest pet retail chains, where she supported logistics, travel coordination, procurement, and project delivery in a fast-paced environment.

She enjoys being behind the scenes, keeping things organised and running efficiently, with a strong focus on attention to detail and balancing multiple priorities.

Outside of work, Julia enjoys weight training, embracing her role as a proud crazy cat mum to her three cats, reading romantasy books, and getting outdoors for hikes, camping, and the occasional (and sometimes unsuccessful) skateboarding session.

There is a narrative in rural health recruitment that too many people have started to accept as fixed: doctors are impossible to find, so you take what you can get.

The shortage is real, but when every hiring decision starts from desperation, a different kind of risk begins to build.

Role briefs become weaker, expectations become looser, and real assessment gets replaced by relief that someone said yes. That does not solve the problem.

At DNA Healthcare, we believe rural recruitment is tough, but the right process still matters.

Locum work often makes sense when life or career is shifting.

We see clinicians move into it at all stages, from new fellows seeking more perspective before committing to a full-time role, to experienced doctors seeking more flexibility later in their careers.

For many, it is not just about the work itself. It is about creating space to adjust, explore, and make decisions that better fit the stage of life they are in.

That flexibility is one of the reasons locum work continues to appeal.

Hear from Jill as she explains what often draws clinicians into locum work.

We are seeing the pressure play out in real time.

Recent reporting has brought renewed attention to the strain long shifts place on hospital rosters, with doctors calling for shifts longer than 12.5 hours to be banned.

When long hours become routine, the risks do not stay contained to fatigue alone.

They start to show up in fragile coverage, more pressure on already stretched teams, and less margin for safe care.

Locum support can help relieve pressure where it starts.

At DNA Healthcare, we help services use locum coverage to strengthen rosters before the strain compounds.

Candidate experience is shaped by more than just the outcome.

It is also shaped by the quality of support, communication, and follow-through throughout the process.

This feedback from a candidate we placed is a strong reminder that thoughtful recruitment assistance can have a real impact on the experience of a placement.

Aruna, our Consultant from the Nursing Division, reflects that approach in the way she supports candidates from opportunity through to onboarding.

At DNA Healthcare, we believe the process should feel as considered as the placement itself.

At DNA, the placements that stay with us are usually those that carry meaning on both professional and personal levels.

In this video, Chloe, our Senior Consultant - Nursing Division, reflects on a placement that did exactly that.

She helped place a clinical operations lead into a senior role within an Aboriginal medical service, allowing him to continue doing work he cared deeply about while being much closer to home.

After years of working away, that shift enabled him to spend more time with his wife and children on weekends.

For us, that is the kind of outcome that reminds us why recruitment can matter so much.
