It’s National Reconciliation Week | 27 May to 3 June

The theme , All In, reminds us that reconciliation is ongoing work that asks all of us to reflect, learn and act.

ACNP, joined by other Australian nursing and midwifery peak bodies, and led by the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nurses and Midwives (CATSINaM), responded to the recent Inquiry into racism, hate and violence directed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This submission demonstrates a commitment from the nursing and midwifery professions to lead the health system to eliminate racism against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This is one action, and part of our journey to be ‘All in’.

Today 17 May is IDAHOBIT: International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia and Discrimination Against Intersex People. It’s also known as the International Day Against LGBTIQA+ Discrimination.

It was started in 2004 to commemorate the day in 1990 when the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder.

There is still a long way to go. As of 2026, there are still 65 countries where homosexuality is criminalised, around the world trans people continue to face violence and pathologisation and our intersex friends keep fighting for the right to bodily integrity, physical autonomy and self-determination.

Over the years, the focus of the day has broadened to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by all sexuality and gender diverse communities, as well as intersex people.

Today, IDAHOBIT is recognised in more than 130 countries, including Australia.

This year’s global theme is 'At the Heart of Democracy’. It highlights that despite our diverse backgrounds, most people desire communities where every life can flourish. However, reactionary governments worldwide are imposing authoritarian policies that work against these aspirations.

Time and again, LGBTQIA+ people have resisted these types of policies and movements, sowing seeds of change, and on IDAHOBIT this year, we are all invited to join at the heart of democracy to prepare the ground for a better future for everyone.

Stand up and make your voice heard this IDAHOBIT day. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧
