The flow, the burn, when I drop it into a class people know about it (for days 😅) The Series of 5. I love it! I also love how it’s a perfect example of how Pilates has evolved, and continues to evolve decades on since
Joesph Pilates created the original repertoire, Contrology.
His OG students, who we call the Pilates Elders (I swear Pilates isn’t a cult 😂), went on to teach and shape Pilates, each adding their own flavour. Take Ron Fletcher for example his dance background added more rhythm, breath and standing work into Pilates and he created his own take Fletcher Pilates, and Kathy Grant, the only African American Pilates Elder, was big on adapting Pilates to the body and capability in front of her. LOVE! She had powerful influence on the inclusive way many of us teach today.
Then there’s Romana Kryzanowska, a huge influence on classical Pilates, she is credited with expanding Single Leg Stretch and Double Leg Stretch into the 5 exercise ab series we teach today. Romana gave us so much spice.
I adore original repertoire it gives us an anchor, but the method continues to develop. That evolution hasn’t made Pilates less Pilates. It’s part of why Pilates it’s still so relevant. Different teachers, different styles, different bodies, it all should be celebrated!
