Most people believe ADHD, autism, OCD, and other neurodevelopmental challenges are simply genetic, that there’s nothing you can do.

But as Dr. Melillo explains, these aren’t single-gene mutations. They’re epigenetic, shaped by environment and experience. That means change is possible.

Through the Melillo Method Australia, we can help shift brain development in a positive direction, creating real and lasting improvements for children and families.

You’re not stuck with the cards you were dealt. There is hope, and there are answers.

This is what many parents are never told:

The food your child eats doesn’t just affect energy or digestion. It physically affects how their brain develops and functions.

Omega-3s help build neuron cell membranes.
Iron supports myelination and healthy nerve signaling.
Zinc helps regulate attention pathways.
Magnesium supports a calmer nervous system.

When these nutrients are consistently low, focus, regulation, learning, and behaviour all become harder.

And when ultra-processed foods dominate the diet, it can increase inflammation, destabilise blood sugar, and disrupt the gut–brain connection.

Food is not just fuel.
It’s brain structure, brain chemistry, and your child’s daily experience of themselves.

Save this and share it with another parent who needs to hear it.

If someone has told you your child’s Moro reflex can never be integrated… that’s simply not true.

The Moro reflex is meant to integrate as the brain develops.

When it doesn’t, the nervous system stays stuck in fight-or-flight.

That’s why kids can be overwhelmed by noise, emotional, easily distracted, and struggle with sleep.

But here’s the important part, the brain can change.

When we give the nervous system the right input, things start to shift.

Gentle rocking, deep pressure, and slow, controlled movements help the brain feel safe again.

Over time, the brain stops reacting like danger is everywhere.

Kids settle faster, sleep better, and handle the world with more ease.

Your child is not stuck like this for life.

Your child’s behaviour is not “just behavioural.” Their gut and brain are constantly communicating through the gut–brain axis.

When kids eat more ultra-processed foods, artificial additives, and excess sugar, the gut microbiome shifts toward inflammation. This can affect serotonin production, mood, focus, sleep, and emotional regulation.

When kids eat more whole foods rich in fibre and nutrients, the gut becomes more balanced, inflammation decreases, and behaviour and focus often improve.

What we feed children doesn’t just affect digestion. It affects how they feel and function every day.

Share this with another parent who needs to hear it.

Most parents think of fibre as a digestive aid, something to keep things moving. But fibre does something far more significant than that, particularly for children. It plays a direct role in brain function, mood, emotional regulation, and energy. Read the full blog to learn why 👇

Most parents think of fibre as a digestive aid, something to keep things moving. But fibre does something far more significant than that, particularly for children. It plays a direct role in brain function, mood, emotional regulation, and energy. Here's why.

Anxiety is one of the most common struggles we see today in both adults and kids.

But as Dr. Melillo explains, anxiety isn’t random. It’s the result of specific brain networks becoming overactive.

Often, it’s linked to the right side of the brain, which is responsible for detecting threat, scanning for danger, and interpreting social cues.

What’s interesting is that many highly creative and talented individuals have this same pattern, strong right-brain activity paired with lower self-confidence.

The goal isn’t to “turn off” anxiety.
It’s to restore balance in the brain so those networks aren’t constantly overfiring.

At Brain Hub Kids, a licensed Melillo Method Australia Centre, we look at these patterns and support the brain so regulation, confidence, and calm can improve.

If your child struggles with focus, hyperactivity, emotional regulation, tummy issues, or energy crashes, here are 5 nutrition changes I’d start with first:

• Add protein at breakfast to support focus and stable blood sugar
• Check iron properly, low iron can affect mood, sleep, and attention
• Reduce artificial colours and ultra-processed snacks
• Pair carbs with protein and healthy fats to stabilise energy
• Support gut health daily, gut issues can directly affect behaviour and brain function

You don’t need to change everything overnight. Small, consistent changes matter most.

Comment below with something specific you’d like help with and I’ll make a Part 3.

If you’re doing the exercises and wondering… “Is this even working?” you’re not alone.

And this is where a lot of parents get stuck.

Progress doesn’t always show up in obvious ways first.

It’s often subtle.

Your child might fall asleep faster.
Recover quicker after a meltdown.
Need less help to calm down.
Or show small improvements in focus.

Even if the main challenge hasn’t changed yet.

That doesn’t mean nothing is happening.

It means the brain is building the foundation first.

Reflex integration is developmental.

The brain often revisits earlier stages before moving forward, which is why progress can feel uneven.

Two steps forward, one step back is normal.

This is the approach we use at the Melillo Method Australia Centre to support autism, ADHD, communication delays, and child development.

Most parents think these signs are “normal kid behaviour.”
As a nutritionist, I often see something deeper going on.

Here are 5 signs your child’s brain may be affected by nutrition:

• Poor focus and short attention span
• Emotional meltdowns after certain foods
• Constant fatigue, even after sleep
• Hyperactivity after meals
• Constipation or ongoing tummy issues

The gut and brain are constantly communicating, and things like blood sugar swings, nutrient deficiencies, artificial additives, and gut inflammation can have a real impact on behaviour, mood, and focus.

This doesn’t mean food is the only answer.
But it is often a missing piece.

How many of these signs are you noticing in your child?

What if some of what we’re calling a disorder is actually a brain that hasn’t fully developed yet?

In a recent conversation between Dr. Melillo and Dr. Carlo Rinaudo, they break down a different way to look at autism, ADHD and anxiety, not just as symptoms, but as signs of how the brain is developing and connecting.

Things like focus, emotional regulation, and behavior don’t exist on their own. They’re built on deeper systems like movement, balance and sensory processing.

And when those systems are off, everything on top of them can be affected.

We unpacked the key insights from that discussion in this blog.

Read it here: https://brainhubkids.com.au/is-it-really-a-disorder-or-a-brain-thats-still-developing/

What if some of the challenges we're seeing in children today aren't purely disorders, but signs of uneven brain development? That's one of the central questions explored in a recent conversation between Dr. Robert Melillo and Dr. Carlo Rinaudo on the A Moment of Zen podcast.
