Eyedrop therapy can really burn a hole in your wallet - and if you're an eyedrop prescriber, it's worth keeping your eye out for this little innocent habit that could be costing your patients a lot more than it should.

Tiny little eyedrop vials are great for transportation as they are discreet, preservative free, lightweight, and can be used for about 24 hours until you should throw them out - this is the point that we often forget to educate patients about, especially those with poor dexterity who might just find the whole excercise too manual to figure out on their own.

Thirty seconds allows you to educate your patients that they can recap with your samples so that they needn't use one vial per dose - you can cap the end with a "click" and generally you can get about 4-6 drops out of each vial. That's a huge saving and a much less wastage on their finances.

They (individual plastic vials) are also absolutely terrible for the environment, but that is a discussion for another day.

IIn a world of online education and search engines at our fingertips, I have to admit that I still love sitting down with a good book.

Perhaps it is the ritual of turning the pages, studying the photographs, and savouring the unmistakable scent of paper and ink...but I think it is also something deeper.

Having had the privilege of authoring a chapter in *Cornea* - the holy grail of corneal textbooks - I have some appreciation of the immense amount of work involved in contributing even one very small piece of the whole. Holding a textbook and noticing its tactile details then somehow feels like paying homage to the many individuals who have devoted their time, knowledge and experience to a shared purpose - many whom I have long admired and am honoured to contribute alongside.

Of course, by the time each new edition reaches print, parts of it may already be several years out of date. Such is the extraordinary pace of modern medicine.

And yet, I still value the fact that somewhere, a clinician took the time to gather the threads of a corneal topic - however esoteric - and offer their own considered interpretation of it.

Perhaps that is what textbooks preserve so beautifully: not only the science and the numbers, but a glimpse into the art of medicine from the experience and perspective of the author-clinician.

Or perhaps it's just because I am a book nerd, and proud of it.

Our mission has always been about getting to know the patient behind the eyes and it is the same philosophy that we take when getting to know our general practice doctors and optometry referrer community.

👁️ Cataract surgery isn't just about seeing clearer - the research on its "hidden" benefits might surprise you.

🧠 Brain health: Adults who have cataract surgery show up to a 29% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those who don't. Restoring clear vision seems to keep the brain more engaged and stimulated.

🦴 Fewer falls & fractures: Blurry vision throws off depth perception and balance. Studies show first-eye cataract surgery can cut fall risk by around 34%, plus lower rates of hip and other fractures - a big deal for staying independent.

🚗 Safer driving: Cataracts can more than double the risk of an at-fault car crash. After first-eye surgery, crash frequency has been shown to drop by around 61%, with a further drop after the second eye is done - saving millions in avoided costs each year.

😴 Better sleep: The natural lens yellows with age and blocks the blue light our brains use to regulate our internal clock. About half of cataract patients report poor sleep before surgery - and sleep quality measurably improves afterward.

💛 Mood boost: Vision loss is closely tied to depression in older adults. Meta-analyses show depression scores improve significantly after cataract surgery, especially once both eyes are treated.

❤️ Even longevity: Long-term studies have linked treating cataract-related vision loss to a 27–46% lower risk of death over time - likely from all the ripple effects above (fewer falls, better mood, more activity, more independence).

Bottom line: cataract surgery is one of the most impactful procedures in medicine - not just for the eyes, but for the whole person. If you or a loved one has been putting it off, it might be worth a conversation with an eye doctor. 👓✨

So many of my loves combined - the art of hospitality, fresh flowers, high tea, and high-level science - with a distinctly ophthalmic twist. 🫖

I had the pleasure of hosting Alcon’s annual TROPSAT meeting at AUSCRS, which took on a wonderfully innovative new format this year.

The event was completely sold out - with not even enough room for the Alcon team themselves - and brought together an exceptional international faculty:

Dr Dr Andrea Ang explored how we can achieve greater efficiency in cataract surgery; Dr Naren Shetty examined biomarker evidence and the question of when to upgrade; Professor Damien Gatinel unpacked the advantages of the Clareon platform; and Dr J. Morgan Micheletti, MD presented the clinical evidence and outcomes with Clareon PanOptix Pro.

Each speaker was outstanding, prompting robust discussion and thoughtful exchange across the room.

The setting was equally memorable: elegant blue-and-white high-tea towers, a carefully curated selection of sweets and savouries, deliciously scented floral and herbal teas, beautiful linens and cutlery, fresh flowers (even boutonnieres!) and beautifully decorated cupcakes for guests. Every detail felt considered and thoughtful, elevating the experience so well.

It was an eyecatching and refreshing evolution of Alcon’s traditional annual event - bringing together rigorous education, lively conversation and genuine hospitality.

Congratulations to the entire Alcon team on delivering such a successful and beautifully executed afternoon - you raise the standard every time.
