For many people, a big win isn't the end of the story; it's the beginning.

That first jackpot can create a powerful emotional high, convincing the brain that another win is just around the corner. The excitement, celebration and rush of dopamine can make it difficult to walk away, even when losses start to outweigh the wins.๐ŸŽฐ

Over time, many people find themselves chasing that same feeling, believing the next spin, bet or game could bring back the excitement of that first big win. Unfortunately, this cycle can lead to financial stress, relationship breakdowns and serious emotional harm.

A big win can feel life-changing,but for some, it's the moment a long struggle with gambling begins.

Don't let one big win become the start of a lifetime of losses. Recognise the signs, start the conversation, and seek support early.๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿง  You Don't Need to Be Addicted to Be Harmed.

Many people believe gambling harm only affects those who gamble every day. The reality is that harm can happen even if you only gamble occasionally.

What may begin as a few bets can gradually lead to financial pressure ๐Ÿ’ธ, relationship strain ๐Ÿ’” and emotional distress ๐Ÿง . The impact isn't defined by how often you gamble, it's defined by the effect it has on your life.

Recognising the signs early can make a real difference. If gambling is affecting your finances, your wellbeing or the people around you, support is available.

๐Ÿ’™ You don't have to face gambling harm alone. Reaching out is a sign of strength, and help is available.

๐ŸŽฐ One addiction. More than $800,000 stolen. A life forever changed.๐Ÿ’ธ

What began as occasional gambling spiralled into a devastating poker machine addiction that led an Adelaide mother to steal more than $800,000 from her employers. Despite knowing her actions were wrong, she said the overwhelming urge to keep gambling took control, leaving her facing prison and the loss of everything she had worked for.๐Ÿ’”

Gambling addiction doesn't just impact finances; it can destroy careers, relationships, reputations and lives. Behind every headline is a person, a family and a community living with the consequences of gambling harm.

If gambling has stopped being fun and is causing harm, support is available. Reaching out early can make all the difference.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Every tap makes gambling easier. Recognising when it's becoming a problem can be much harder.

Today, gambling is only a tap away. With betting and gambling apps available 24/7, there's no need to visit a venue. A bet can be placed almost anywhere, at home, on the train, during a lunch break, or late at night.

While many people gamble without experiencing harm, constant access can make it easier for gambling to become a regular habit. Over time, what starts as occasional entertainment can begin affecting your finances, relationships, mental health, and overall wellbeing. ๐Ÿ’ธ

Take a moment to check in with your gambling habits, or start a conversation with someone you care about. Recognising the signs early can make all the difference. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿค Support is available. You don't have to face gambling harm alone.

๐ŸŽฐ What started as an occasional visit to the pokies slowly became an addiction that consumed Jeffrey's life. He lied to his family, missed birthdays, skipped family dinners and broke promises he desperately wanted to keep. Every trip to the casino pulled him further away from the people who mattered most.๐Ÿ’”

๐Ÿ  By the time he realised the damage, he had lost far more than money. He had lost trust, precious moments with his children and the life he had worked so hard to build.

Gambling addiction doesn't just empty bank accounts. It can destroy relationships, isolate families and leave people feeling trapped in a cycle they don't know how to escape.๐Ÿ“‰

๐Ÿค Recovery wasn't easy. Jeffrey says the hardest part wasn't giving up gambling, it was rebuilding the trust he'd broken. But with support and counselling, he found hope and began rebuilding his life, one day at a time.๐Ÿ™ https://www.deproblemgambling.org/Recovery/Stories/The-Hidden-Addiction

๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ  For many children, gambling harm doesn't end at the pokies, it follows them home.

Nelson grew up in a household where gambling harm shaped everyday life. Debt collectors knocked on the door, savings quietly disappeared, and conflict, fear and mistrust became part of his childhood. Much of that pain remained invisible to those around him.

๐ŸŽจ During the COVID-19 lockdown, when gambling venues closed, Nelson reconnected with his family and discovered art as a way to process years of hidden trauma. Through his artwork, he transformed shame into advocacy, giving a voice to children who have experienced the same hidden harm.

๐Ÿ’ฌ His story is a powerful reminder that gambling harm reaches far beyond financial loss. It can affect a child's sense of safety, belonging and what home should feel like.

โค๏ธ Every child deserves to grow up in a home free from gambling harm.

For more than a decade, a trusted business manager at Melbourne High School abused her position to steal more than $432,000 from the school.๐ŸŽฒ

According to court proceedings, the money was taken over hundreds of transactions and was driven by what her lawyer described as a gambling addiction she "couldn't control".

What began as a hidden addiction eventually led to devastating consequences.๐Ÿ˜”

๐Ÿ’ธ More than $432,000 stolen. A respected career ended. Criminal charges and imprisonment.
Trust built over 25 years was destroyed. Relationships and future employment were severely affected.๐Ÿ’”

Gambling harm doesn't always look the way people expect. It can affect trusted professionals, parents, friends, and colleagues. Many people struggle in silence, carrying feelings of shame, guilt, and financial stress long before anyone notices.

Recognising the warning signs early and seeking support can make a life-changing difference.

๐ŸŽฐ Gambling harm doesn't happen overnight.

For many people, it begins with what feels like harmless entertainmentโ€”a few spins, an occasional bet, or the hope of winning back what was lost.

Over time, the warning signs can become harder to ignore:

โœ…Spending more than intended.
โœ… Feeling stressed or guilty after gambling.
โœ… Chasing losses.
โœ…Hiding gambling from loved ones.
โœ… Gambling affecting relationships, work, or finances.

Recognising these signs early can make all the difference.

๐Ÿ’™ Recovery is possible, and asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

๐ŸŽฐ "I'll win it back."

It's a thought that keeps many people gambling long after they planned to stop.

When losses build up, it can feel tempting to keep playing in the hope that the next spin will recover what's already gone. But this is known as chasing lossesโ€”one of the most common warning signs of gambling harm.

The reality is that every bet and every spin is independent. Previous losses do not increase the chance of winning the next game, and there is no guarantee that a win is "due".

What often starts as an attempt to recover money can lead to even greater financial hardship, emotional distress, strained relationships, and overwhelming debt.

๐Ÿ’™ Walking away isn't giving upโ€”it's choosing to protect your financial wellbeing, your mental health, and the people who care about you.

If you recognise these warning signs in yourself or someone you know, remember that support is available and recovery is possible.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Have you ever heard someone say, "I'll win it back"? Share this post to help raise awareness about the risks of chasing losses.
