The Australian Society of Anaesthetists Supporting, representing and educating Australia’s anaesthetists since 1934.

The Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) was founded in 1934 as a voluntary association of members practicing anaesthesia throughout Australia. The ASA effectively promotes and protects the status, independence and best interests of Australian anaesthetists with its principal foci being the economic, workforce and professional interests of anaesthetists. This is achieved through negotiations

with state and federal health departments and associated medical bodies, the development of policy and the publication of guidelines. The Society, jointly with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA), provides representatives to Standards Australia, Medical Services Advisory Committee and the Professional Services Review Committee. The ASA's publications include the international peer review scientific journal, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, the ASA news and the Relative Value Guide. It conducts an annual National Scientific Congress, and in conjunction with ANZCA provides Continuing Medical Education events at individual state and territory levels. https://iamonline.org.au/

Once again we congratulate the Pacific Society of Anaesthetists on the success of their recent conference. It was great to see many of our Overseas Development and Education Committee (ODEC) members there, as well as all three of the ASA Pacific Fellows in Fiji for 2027.

We are also proud to support the development of pain services in the Pacific. Former ASA Pacific Fellow Dr Moira Rush describes how in this article.

We are proud to support the anaesthetists of the Pacific.

What started, over 40 years ago as individuals has grown!

We are proud to support the The Fiji National University anaesthesia training program, Pacific Society of Anaesthetists (PSA) and the Papua New Guinea Society of Anaesthetists and Intensivists (PNGSAI).

What did that support look like in 2026?

✅ sponsoring 2 anaesthetists (Drs Mario Soares and Filomena Monica) from Timor Leste to attend the PSA meeting in Fiji

✅ sponsoring 2 anaesthetists (Drs Maurice Atalifo and Enele Tuima) to attend the PNGSAI meeting. The connection between the PSA and PNGSAI is important to foster

✅ sponsoring 3 Australian anaesthetists (Drs David Howell, LiLing Hong and Nick Lower) moving to Fiji to assist the local staff (Drs Sherene Prasad, Lisa Bennett and Apaitia Goneyelli) with the training program and practice exams as the ASA Pacific Fellows. We try to support the training during the whole academic year but this year, we were fortunate to have all Pacific Fellows in Fiji at the same time for the PSA Conference.

✅ awarding prizes to the best Diploma and Masters students in anaesthesia

✅ supporting external examiners to attend the FNU exams and help uphold standards and ensure grading is fair
