Mindfulness based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an 8-week experiential educational program, which cultivates mental, physical and psychological resilience. It brings together meditative practices with current

scientific understandings of human functioning to offer intensive and systematic training in formal and informal mindfulness practices. This includes learning how to cultivate an observant, accepting and compassionate stance towards your thoughts, emotions, body sensations and impulses. Extensive research has shown that most course participants report: an increased ability to relax; more energy and enthusiasm for life; improved self-esteem and self-confidence; improved concentration, memory and effective decision-making. Participants have also reported a lasting decrease in: psychological symptoms such as stress, anxiety, depression and irritability; negative thinking patterns and physical symptoms of a range of a chronic health problems including pain, headaches and IBS.

The schedule consists of 8 weekly classes and one daylong class on a Sunday. The emphasis is on experiential learning; practising becoming more mindful, rather than on theory. Each class contains guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practice, and some gentle mindful movement. Individually tailored feedback and a scientific rationale for the practice is provided by the facilitator. Key topics such as: stress physiology, emotional regulation, cognitive behavioural strategies, interpersonal communication and implementing self-care are explored through group discussion and short exercises. An integral part of the training is engagement with home practice, including a daily practice of guided meditation. MP3’s and a course book are provided to guide this. It is important that you are able to do the practices to get the most out of the course. The home practice is made up of meditation practices and mindful movement exercises that are about 30 minutes long. To get the most out of the course, you will need to be able to practise about 45minutes per day, although not necessarily in 1 block. Headrest also provides in-house mindfulness training specifically tailored to the needs of organisations. A 6-week course has been developed for organisations and for teachers.

MINDFUL PARENTING
I've been approached by a mum who works in the NDIS space looking for a mindful parenting group for parents of children with a disability or developmental delay that can be run on Zoom. We are going to make it happen!. I've had 4 expressions of interest and we are looking for a group size of about 6-8. The group will be available using NDIS funding. We will run on a Monday night and are soon to finalise a start date. The start date may be Monday, Aug 3. Please pass this on to anyone who may be interested. Mindfulness will not change your child's behaviour but often when we can soothe ourselves, when we are less stressed our children also settle.
