"When you're emotional, you think in your mother language."

In this episode of , Newsha Javahery, clinical psychotherapist and founder of Newsha Counselling, reflects on something most healthcare conversations quietly overlook.

A client once described losing her mother as "sad."
But the body was saying something heavier. Beyond sadness. Beyond what a second language could hold.

Newsha believes our emotions live inside the language we grew up in. When a person has to translate grief, fear, or memory into another language, something is lost in the gap. Not the meaning, the weight. That weight matters in .
Especially when language shapes what gets said, what gets understood, and what stays unsaid.

Sometimes the most important part of feeling understood, is being given the space to speak in the language your emotions actually live in.

How important do you think language is in the way people experience care?

What helps feel more informed when the information feels ?
When Doesn't Make Sense?

Masi, now a patient advocate, remembers sitting in hearing names of body parts and procedures she had no language for.

She wasn't in the mood to ask. She wasn't in the mood to think about it.
So ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ต๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฏ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜, just so she didn't have to carry the weight of remembering. Then they'd go home, search online together, and slowly piece it into something that made sense. At the beginning, she says, it was very hard. With time, it became more familiar.

Her reflection sits inside a wider pattern. often arrives faster than a person can absorb it, especially early in a journey.

Sometimes understanding doesn't happen in the room. It happens later, at home, in quieter moments.

Reading About Someone Isn't The Same As Seeing Or Hearing Them.

In this conversation with Lalavi, ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฃ๐˜€๐˜†๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜ and ๐—™๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ of -Psychology, she reflects on a small but meaningful choice she makes before meeting a new client.

Even when background information is available before the first session, Homeyra often chooses not to read it. She explains that reading something in advance can quietly shape an assumption, and create an image of a person before they have had a chance to introduce themselves.

Her preference is to use that first session to build connection, to hear the story from the person directly, and to let them shape how they are understood.

A quiet reminder that can lose something human when communication starts on paper instead of in person.

Thatโ€™s how Masi described navigating the system while hearing medical words sheโ€™d never heard before.

Sometimes patients are not just processing a diagnosis. Theyโ€™re also trying to understand the system around them.

"I love to know other people's . I love to know how I can be a help for them to have a better life, or to be closer to the person they want to be."
