Routine preventative heart health checks are important.

Over half of Australian adults live with three or more modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease and modifiable cardiovascular risk factors account for 90% of risk of heart attack, reinforcing the fact that cardiovascular disease is largely preventable.

Cardiovascular disease causes one in four of all deaths and accounts for 1,619 hospitalisations per day.

Is your home making you sick?

Our home can sometimes make us unwell.

From mould to dust, to air pollution, it’s worth considering how our place of abode can be improved to keep us healthy.

Here are some dangers that affect our health, and ways we can improve our homes to reduce these risks.

Mould

With all this wet weather, mould is popping up everywhere.

Humidity, sub-floors and close living quarters promote damp and mould growth. This can cause nasal congestion, sneezing, cough, wheeze, respiratory infections, asthma and allergy. Mould has even been linked to depression.

Ensuring good ventilation, insulating walls and floors, using anti-mould paint, fixing any water leaks and using de-humidifiers can help reduce mould in your house.

Dust mite

Allergies are on the rise and 20% of Australians are allergic to something in the environment (not just medications). Anaphyllaxis, or full blown airway swelling and constriction, has increased four fold over the past 20 years. One of the most common allergies is house dust mite, which are microscopic mites that feed on dead skin that we shed. Symptoms of allergy can include itchy eyes, nose, skin, and shortness of breath, chest tightness and cough.

Reducing house dust mite requires a concerted effort to eliminate carpet (or vacuum regularly), use dust mite resistant covers for pillow and mattresses, wash all bedding and clothes in hot water (over 60 degrees in a front loader), avoid soft toys and use chemical sprays and air filters to eliminate house dust mite populations.

Air pollutants

Concerns have been raised about pollutants in the home, including trichloroethylene (in paints, adhesives and can cause headache and nausea), formaldehyde (in paper towels, synthetic fabrics and can cause nose and throat irritation), benzene (in plastics, detergents, glue and can cause eye irritation and headaches), xylene (in rubber, leather and can cause dizziness and confusion), and ammonia (in window cleaners, fertilizers and can cause eye irritation and cough). Be aware of these ingredients in products you buy for the home.

From the above, what can you change today in your home to make it a healthier home?

Pick one and let the team at Osana know.

When you exercise, are you getting your heart rate up over 100?

Osana's Exercise Physiologist, Scott Atherton talks about the importance of getting your heart rate up when moving your body and he can tell you what that looks like in your health screen with him.

Did you know that a single session of moderate-intensity exercise (where you get your heart rate up to over 100) has been shown to improve emotional reactivity and anhedonia (loss of interest in pleasurable activities), which are core features of depression?

If you are due for your yearly health screen, book in to see Scott and in no time you will have your body moving and heart rate up.

He is available for your health screens Friday mornings so call up the lovely ladies at our clinics to make your booking.

Are you going to be treating yourself to some chocolate this weekend?🙄 Try swapping out for dark chocolate options and reaping the added health benefits!

Did you know that flavonoids in dark chocolate induce nitric oxide that relaxes blood vessels and, therefore, lower blood pressure?

Flavonoids can also reduce oxidative stress, which is linked to insulin resistance, reducing diabetes risk. Less oxidative stress may also benefit the ageing process and reduce cancer risk by limiting free radical formation (epicatechin and quercetin are the flavonoids believed to have cancer-fighting properties).

Chocolate can also stimulate neural activity and serotonin levels, enhancing cognitive function, decreasing stress, and improving mood. In addition, it can stimulate beneficial bacterial growth in our gut (prebiotic), supporting digestion and metabolism.

So indulge in some dark chocolate in moderation with your loved ones this weekend and share the health benefits. We wish you and your family a safe and relaxing long weekend. 😎☀️

A reminder that we are closed for the break on Friday and reopen on Tuesday at 8 am. For any urgent issues, please get in touch with our after-hours partner, 1300homegp.

Last week we celebrated World Health Organization (WHO) . A day for the World Health Organization (WHO) to focus global attention on urgent actions needed to keep humans and the planet healthy and foster a movement to create societies focused on well-being. YES PLEASE! The WHO message feels particularly relevant right now as we roll with induced rain & floods, an on-going pandemic and global conflict. It's more important than ever to stay positive and focus, not just for a day, but DAILY, on the small, actions we can take to create healthier individuals and healthier communities. Here are 5 simple steps recommended by WHO and supported by our philosophy, that we can all take now. And while we're at it, let's stand up while we eat our lunch today! And take 5-20 minutes to do a few old school star jumps, dust off a skipping rope and skip, and have a little living room disco to dance like everyone's watching. A little daily movement, even indoors, goes a long way - and see how many of the below 5 items you can tick off. Healthy individuals, and healthy communities really are the way forward. In health & happiness, the entire team at Osana.Care x
