Today is Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day, and Avant is proud to be sponsoring this year's event right here in Launceston.

The theme is ‘Safe to Speak Up’. Because too many doctors are still carrying it alone, not because they don't need support, but because the culture of medicine makes asking for it feel impossible.

Founder Dr Geoff Toogood started this movement in 2017 with a simple idea: wear colourful socks, start a conversation, break the silence. Eight years on, the movement has gone national. And the work continues.

Join us today. Wear your socks. Share your photo with .

The Avant team was on campus again this week. We enjoyed connecting with students from UNSW and finding out how we can support you during medical school. Whether it's navigating placements or understanding your insurance cover, we're here for you at every stage.

Dr Geoff Toogood started Crazy Socks 4 Docs because too many doctors were carrying things alone. Not because they wanted to. Because the culture of medicine made speaking up feel impossible.

Eight years on, the movement has grown, the conversation has widened, and yes socks have got wilder. But the work is not done.

This year's theme is ‘Safe to Speak Up’. We think that applies in more ways than one.

Safe to speak up about your mental health.

Safe to speak up about your workload.

Safe to ask for help.

Avant is honoured to sponsor this year's Launceston event and to stand alongside every doctor who has ever needed to say: "I'm not okay."

This week marks National Reconciliation Week, a time to reflect on our shared history, recognise the cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and consider our role in reconciliation. The 2026 theme, All In, reminds us that meaningful progress requires all of us to listen, learn, engage, and commit to reconciliation every day.

Avant Chief Medical Officer Professor Steve Robson had the chance to speak with Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA) CEO Associate Professor Peter Malouf on the importance of reconciliation and allyship in healthcare.

Closing the Gap requires a whole-of-community effort to improve equity, outcomes and cultural safety for First Nations peoples.

The AIDA Bursary from the Avant Foundation supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students by helping remove barriers to medical education and increasing Indigenous representation in the profession. Apply for a 2026 bursary using this link: https://bit.ly/4xirzsm

Everyone has seen the headlines from the Federal Budget, but they only tell part of the story. The budget is sending some very clear signals about where health policy is heading, especially for doctors.

Avant has appeared before the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee on draft legislation that could reshape how doctor fees are communicated to patients.

Representing more than 90,000 members, our Chief Medical Officer Professor Steve Robson and Advocacy General Manager Georgie Haysom put the medical profession's interests squarely on the record.

The draft legislation would allow the Federal Government to publish fee and out-of-pocket cost data publicly. We support greater transparency – but only when that data is accurate, contextualised, and meaningful.

Misleading information doesn't serve patients. And it doesn't serve doctors.

Avant will continue to advocate for a framework that reflects the complexity of medical practice and protects the trust at the heart of the doctor–patient relationship.

Getting onto a specialist training program is challenging. Here's what your fellow doctors think you need to do to succeed:

1. Academic performance is important – but it’s only the foundation

2. “Who you know” is actually as important as they say it is

3. Demonstrate genuine interest and passion for the specialty in the interview

4. Consider geographical flexibility

5. Be honest with yourself about your motivation and passion.
