An important advancement in breast surgery, offering eligible women a minimally invasive option with a smaller, discreetly placed incision.

A new minimally invasive mastectomy option is now available here at Westmead Private Hospital, designed to avoid a visible scar across the chest.

The procedure, known as endoscopic ni**le-sparing mastectomy, can be particularly beneficial for women who have inherited genetic mutations that increase their risk of breast cancer.

It's been introduced to our hospital by Associate Professor Farid Meybodi, who says that while the cancer or risk-reduction outcome of a mastectomy is the priority, it's also important to consider recovery, scarring and how a woman feels about her body after surgery.

“This technique can allow us to perform the mastectomy through a much smaller, discreetly placed incision while maintaining the same oncological and surgical objectives.”

What is Endoscopic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy?

Endoscopic ni**le-sparing mastectomy is a modern surgical technique that allows breast tissue to be removed through a small, hidden incision, while preserving the breast skin and ni**le–areola complex.

An incision of approximately 4 cm is carefully positioned within the lateral mammary fold, where it is naturally concealed. Using an endoscopic camera and specialised instruments, the mastectomy is performed through this small access point.

The technique may be considered for selected women having a mastectomy for breast cancer or risk reduction, including some women with BRCA gene mutations.

By keeping the incision small and away from the ni**le, we aim to preserve the surrounding skin, blood supply and nerve connections as much as possible, while maintaining the fundamental priority of safe breast surgery.

Not everyone is suitable for this approach, and careful assessment and surgical planning are essential.
