A few shots from an all-round awesome weekend of Chen Taiji in the Sunshine Coast, Queensland.

Huge appreciation to 张丽娜 Master Chen Yingjun 🐉 for his generosity in teaching & in tea 🍵.

To our organsier and host Nathan Coxsen, Nathan Coxsen.
Thank you to you & Erica for your generosity of spirit in having Eugene & I stay with you (again! :)
Your hospitality can’t be matched.🙏🏻

The workshop focused on Zhang Zhong (Standing Post) with corrections, Gongfu posture with corrections, Lao Jia Yi Lu form and Tuishou (Push-hands) concept and practice, including a padded area for takedown practice.
Master Chen demonstrated live takedown applications using Taiji principles to an eager audience.

An amazing community of dedicated Taiji players and people, such a welcoming & friendly atmosphere.

Thank you to all 🙏🏻.

Leaving feeling joyful and inspired ☯️.

Pie Shen Quan (Draping fist over body) - March 2026

A few shots from my last visit to Queensland in March for my teachers (CYJ) Brisbane workshop.
Working on Gongfu posture training or Dìng shì (定式)
One of the most challenging aspects of Chen Taijiquan but also one of the most fulfilling.

It’s said that Dìng shì and form (taolu) training is like building the foundations of a house. You aim to spend time making sure everything is precise, level and strong. Later after great effort you no longer think about the foundations — but they should support everything you do.

定 (dìng) = to settle, stabilise, fix, determine, establish, make firm
式 (shì) = form, pattern, posture, frame

So literally:
定式 = ‘settled form’ / ‘established posture’ / ‘fixed pattern’
Or…the moment when a movement has arrived at its complete organised state.
However, the Chinese carries more depth than ‘fixed posture’. Dìng does not mean stiff or frozen. It implies stability, resolution, and being properly established.

A useful way to explain it:
Shì (式) is the external shape or configuration
Dìng (定) is the quality of being settled, calm, and stable within that shape.

So not merely: ‘Stop here and hold this position.’
Instead, arrive at the correct configuration and allow it to become settled and embodied or understood.

I’ve heard Master Chen Yingjun emphasise that it’s not necessarily how long you can stay in the posture that really matters but what you can learn and gather from the postural correction and….more importantly, how that can be brought into your practice of the form to ultimately improve.

Put simply. Dìng shì….You burn, you learn, you earn🔥☯️🔥

A few shots from Master Chen Yingjun’s first Canadian workshop in Ottawa 2026 🇨🇦 🍁.

It was such a privilege to attend and see my teacher CYJ 🤜 🔥🤛 instruct and guide both new and experienced Chen Taiji students in Standing meditation, Silk reeling exercises, Gongfu postures & Lao Jia Yi Lu form practice.☯️

My sincere thanks & gratitude to my friend and Gongfu brother Eduardo Molon .taijiquan for hosting and for such a warm welcome. 🙏🏻

Eduardo has built a strong Chen Taiji base in Ottawa and it was wonderful to meet so many super friendly Taiji players and make new friends 🤝especially Romulo & Devin .free

Master Chen was in top form giving clear demonstrations on each section of the form, advice on how to practice, postural corrections and generously answering questions for students & players in his usual relaxed but highly instructive style.

Am I glad I travelled ✈️? 110%.

Thank you Master Chen, Eduardo & all the Canadian Chen Taiji family for an awesome experience🙏🏻.

I hope I can make it back again before too long.

Most people think Taiji is for old people… waving their hands in the air in the park. 👋🏼👋🏼 🌳

Chen Taijiquan is a complete movement system for body and mind. By carefully studying body posture, structure & alignment, overtime we develop balance, calmness & power.

External shape and internal mechanics give rise to a frame. The Chinese word is Jia.
Like a house built from solid foundations 🏠.

The legs and waist (or centre/dantian) are the powerhouse. The rules are strict, the principles of practice are unchanging from beginner to Master level.
Progress is mostly incremental 🐢 and requires dedicated practice.

Having a world class teacher to show you the way🚦helps establish solid fundamentals and in avoiding pitfalls & wasted time. ⏳

Even with such guidance the student still must climb the mountain themselves step by step.
What a journey! ✨

Returning from and reflecting upon my recent 3 day Chen Taijiquan workshop in Brisbane with my teacher - Master Chen Yingjun.🐲

A highlight for me aside from the Taiji was daily
Gongfu cha with Master Chen.✨

Gongfu Cha or “kung fu tea,” is a traditional Chinese tea preparation method that emphasizes skill and care in brewing tea for a focused and mindful tasting experience, often involving multiple short infusions.🍵🍵🍵

The various teas chosen often have a cooling quality as per Chinese medicinal herbal understanding. After a good Taiji practice and burn they and the tea process bring a welcome calming quality to mind and body. 😌

The simple things in life bring the greatest joy.
Taiji & Tea.☯️

Thank you to our unbelievable host, brother and friend Nathan Coxsen for his incredible organisation to make everything run like clockwork. No detail missed.🙏🏻

My fellow travellers & brothers from Sydney, Eugene & Justin wonderful to share the experience with you both.🙏🏻

To Master Chen Yingjun for his inspirational teaching & his delicious teas.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Working on the Chen Taiji Guandao form with Master Chen Yingjun has been a highlight of this Dragon year 2024.

As he leaves to teach in Europe again I’ve got more than enough to work on, now to find the time🤔.

Thank you for the inspiration & guidance Master Chen 🙏🏻.

Ice baths and cold water immersion are popular trends at the moment.
Eastern health practices tend to take a more nuanced & individualised approach to the how, why and when to use or avoid certain practices based on your overall current state of health, past health issues, body type and constitution.

To plunge or not to plunge? That is the question 🙂
