Dust diseases occupy a very specific corner of occupational therapy. It's one we know well.

Workers who have spent years in industries like mining, construction, or manufacturing, and who are now living with conditions like silicosis, asbestosis, or coal workers' pneumoconiosis, have needs that sit well outside a standard OT assessment.

The clinical picture is complex. The functional decline can be rapid and unpredictable. And the people navigating these cases on behalf of clients need a provider who understands the specific demands of this work, not someone who is figuring it out as they go.

Momentum OT works in this space. We carry out functional assessments, home modification recommendations, and assistive technology evaluations for dust disease clients, with the clinical rigour and documentation standards that this cohort requires.

We work with a lot of people who are doing their best to stay independent…

But their home is working against them.

We’re talking about things like:
Bathrooms that aren’t safe to use
Entryways that limit mobility
Layouts that increase fatigue or risk of falls
Equipment that isn’t fitted properly (or not there at all)

And over time, this doesn’t just impact safety... It impacts confidence, independence, and quality of life.

At Momentum, a big part of our work is identifying:

Something has shifted in the NDIS referral landscape, and most Support Coordinators already know it.

The straightforward cases aren't landing on your desk anymore. Budget constraints have changed what gets referred, which means the cases that do come through tend to be the ones that need real clinical thinking, careful documentation, and someone who can step into a complicated situation and make sense of it.

That's the work that gets us out of bed in the morning.

At Momentum OT, we're experienced clinicians who work with complexity as a matter of course. Complex home modifications. Functional capacity assessments that need to be defensible under scrutiny.

In sectors like NDIS, and aged care the level of complexity can be high.

We’re often working with:

In these situations, experience isn’t a “nice to have”... it’s critical.

One of the biggest gaps we see in occupational therapy is this: progress happens in the appointment - but doesn’t carry over into real life.

At Momentum, our work doesn’t centre around the session.
It centres around how someone is actually living day-to-day.

That means we’re looking at things like:
Can they safely move around their home?
Are daily tasks manageable or exhausting?
Is their environment helping… or making things harder?
Are the supports practical enough to use consistently?

Because real progress isn’t:
✔ Completing an activity once in a session

It’s:
✔ Being able to do it again tomorrow
✔ And the day after that
✔ In your own space, on your own terms

That’s why we work in real environments, not just controlled ones.

Rochelle is an Occupational Therapist with over 11 years of experience working across both clinical practice and senior leadership roles within allied health services. She’s been supporting participants under the NDIS while also leading clinical teams, strengthening service delivery, and driving quality and compliance across services.

Rochelle is passionate about supporting children and adults with disability to achieve greater independence and works closely with participants and families to deliver practical, person-centred supports.

“Functional capacity” gets used a lot, but rarely explained in a way that actually helps.

At its core, it’s simple:

It’s about understanding how someone functions in their real life, not just in an assessment or a session.

At Momentum, we’re not just asking: What can this person do?

We’re asking:
What does their day actually look like?
Where are things breaking down?
What would make the biggest difference right now?

That might include:
Navigating daily routines
Communicating needs
Regulating emotions
Participating socially
Building independence over time

Because a report shouldn’t just describe challenges.
It should create clarity for the participant, their family, and the whole support team.

When you truly understand someone’s functional capacity, you stop guessing and start building supports that actually fit.
