UNIBUDS at a Glance

The University of New South Wales Buddhist Society (UNIBUDS) was the first Buddhist organisation on campus in Australia; established in 1981. Venerable Tsang Hui from Hwa Tsang Monastery and Venerable Chao Khun Samai from Wat Pa Buddharangsee are currently the patrons of UNIBUDS, and have been since the formation period. UNIBUDS is a non-sectarian Buddhist society and thus it

supports all Buddhism schools and traditions e.g.: Theravada, Mahayana, Tibetan and so on. Over the years, UNIBUDS has grown and flourished to be the largest student Buddhist society on campus in Australia. The activities and events held during a year period include regular English and Chinese dhamma talks, weekly sports sessions, monthly meditation workshops, meditation retreats, social functions and lots more. UNIBUDS always maintains a harmonious relationship among members within the society and outside the society with other Buddhist societies in NSW. UNIBUDS website:

There's a group of ex-UNIBUDS in Malaysia form an association, Zheng Xin Buddhist Association (UNIBUDS alumni, formed year 1999) to continue the journey of learning Dhamma.

Hello Unibuddies 👋🌿

How have you all been lately? Week 4 is here, and with it come even more upcoming events 🧘‍♀️✨A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came to the meditation workshop last Saturday.

This week’s Meditation Session focuses on Cool Down and Slow Down 🌟 It is a calming practice designed to help you release mental tension, regulate stress, and bring your attention back to the present moment. It’s a simple way to step out of the mid-semester rush and restore a sense of balance.

In our Chinese Dhamma Talk, we’ll explore the Middle Way and Buddhist Precepts 🪷, discussing why precepts exist in Buddhism and how they function not as rigid rules, but as protection for the mind and practice. We’ll also look at how the Five Precepts help prevent extremes, and how the Middle Way can be applied in everyday decisions and behaviour.

Our English Dhamma Talk will focus on "Why Do Buddhists Meditate" 🧘‍♂️✨ The theme unpacks the purpose of meditation in Buddhist practice, from cultivating awareness and stability of mind to developing insight and inner clarity in daily life.

Also, a quick reminder that the Monastery Visit is happening next Saturday (4 July) 🏞️. It is a great opportunity to step away from the city, experience a peaceful environment, and deepen your practice in the monastery.

As always, feel free to drop in, bring a friend, or just come as you are 🥰
We’d love to SEE YOU this week 💛

Hope everyone is finding their rhythm in this busy semester! 📚✨ As assignments start piling up, don’t forget to take a moment to pause and reset.🌱

A gentle reminder that our Meditation Workshop is happening this Saturday 🧘‍♂️✨ It is a great opportunity to deepen your practice and learn practical techniques for calm and focus. Everyone is welcome, especially beginners!🥰

This week, our Tuesday Meditation Session will focus on “Non-Sleep Deep Rest” 😴✨ A guided practice designed to help the body fully relax while the mind remains gently aware. It’s a powerful way to release fatigue, restore energy, and improve clarity without needing actual sleep.

In our Chinese Dhamma Talk, we’ll be exploring “The Noble Eightfold Path” 🪷, including what the Eightfold Path is, how Right View influences the choices we make in daily life, and how Right Mindfulness and Right Concentration can support our studies, work, and emotional balance. We’ll also reflect on the concept of the Middle Way and how it helps us navigate extremes in modern life.

Meanwhile, our English Dhamma Talk will introduce “Dependent Origination” 🌱, looking at the principle of how all experiences arise through causes and conditions. This teaching helps us understand the interconnected nature of life and how awareness of these links can support greater wisdom and freedom in everyday situations.

As always, all sessions are open to everyone — whether you're new to Buddhism or simply curious 🤗 All zoom links are in bio. Come with questions, come to listen, or just come to unwind. We’d love to see you there!

Let’s continue the semester with a calmer mind and clearer awareness 💛🌿

Hope everyone is settling into the semester and surviving the week so far! 📚✨ Whether you're juggling lectures, assignments, work, or all of the above, don't forget to take a moment to slow down and recharge. 🌿

A huge thank you to everyone who joined our activities last week! It was wonderful seeing both familiar and new faces at our meditation session and Dhamma talks 😊. We hope you left with something meaningful to reflect on and carry into your daily life.

This week, our Tuesday Meditation Session will explore the theme "To Let Go of Discomfort" 🧘‍♀️💫. We often spend so much energy resisting difficult emotions, stressful situations, or things that don't go according to plan. Through meditation, we'll learn how to acknowledge discomfort with kindness, let go of unnecessary tension, and create more space for calm and resilience.

In our Chinese Dhamma Talk, "Buddhism's Perspectives on Suffering and Happiness" 🪷, we'll explore why Buddhism begins its teachings with the reality of suffering, the different forms of suffering described by the Buddha, what conditions give rise to genuine happiness, and how practising the Ten Wholesome Actions can directly improve the quality of our everyday lives.

Our English Dhamma Talk will focus on "Establishing Mindfulness (Satipatthana): Developing Inner Joy" 🌟. Together we'll look at the Buddha's teachings on the Five Aggregates and how understanding the nature of our body, feelings, perceptions, mental formations, and consciousness can help us cultivate greater mindfulness, wisdom, and lasting inner contentment.

As always, everyone is welcome🤗. There will be plenty of snacks, warm conversations, and good company waiting for you 🍪☕💕

We can't wait to see you this week! 🌱✨

Hello Unibuddies 👋💛

Week 1 is finally here! We hope everyone had a refreshing break and is settling back into uni life smoothly. Before we jump into another exciting term, a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Autumn Retreat 🍂. It was wonderful spending time together away from the city, practising meditation, learning the Dhamma, enjoying delicious meals, and sharing meaningful conversations with you☺️. We hope you returned feeling refreshed and inspired for the semester ahead. ✨

If you missed out on the retreat, don't worry! Our weekly activities are back and we'd love to see you there! 🌿

The venue and time for this term’s weekly activities have changed, so please take note.

In this week's Chinese Dhamma Talk, we’ll be discussing Karma and Rebirth 🪷. What exactly is karma? Why do we sometimes put in our best effort yet still not see the results we hope for? And if Buddhism teaches cause and effect, where does free will fit into the picture? Join us as we explore how Buddhism understands destiny, personal responsibility, and the choices we make every day.

For our English Dhamma Talk, we'll be looking at The Middle Way ⚖️, one of the Buddha's most important teachings. We'll explore its historical origins, what "right view" means in Buddhist practice, and how avoiding extremes can help us navigate modern life with greater balance and wisdom.

Whether you're completely new to Buddhism or have been attending our events for a while, everyone is welcome 🤗. Bring a friend, come with questions, or simply drop by and listen. As always, there'll be free snacks, good company, and a supportive space to learn and connect 🍪☕.

We can't wait to see both familiar and new faces this week. Let's start the semester with calm minds and open hearts. 🌱✨
