The Art of Sensitive Observation
Being sensitive and responding to the client in the most appropriate way has been thought about and written about for decades.

Slowly, this and other concepts about the therapeutic relationship are taking hold. After a career of experiencing my own practice leaning strongly in the direction of sensitivity to the client and responsiveness in the moment, I chose to pursue a PhD to find out what this is really all about.

The results have produced a model that encompasses most, if not all, of the elements that have largely been explored by others separately. It has proved possible to encompass everything within a system of therapy that is being called “client-responsiveness” with the central determining elements being “sensitive awareness”.

This presentation will describe these concepts, how they interact and integrate, and especially the central theme of sensitivity: What it is and how we can increase our sensitivity in therapeutic practice.

He is co-author with Ernest Rossi, PhD, of The Practitioner’s Guide to Mirroring Hands (Crown House, 2017), and with Matthew Dahlitz of The Practitioner’s Guide to the Science of Psychotherapy (Norton, 2022). He is Patron of The Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists (ASCH) and author of numerous other books and book chapters.

ARHG Update (from Margit)

I have completed and submitted the database of Registered Professionals details to the Australian Regional Health Group (ARHG). One of the requirements was to add Working With Children expiry dates. Please note that if you do not work with children, the Working With Children certificate is not mandatory.

I have also had a walk-through of the ARHG's portal with ARHG's Manager, Ancillary Provider Services, where I will update members' details as they come to hand. It is worth noting that if an ASCH member's insurance or First Aid dates have expired, the ARHG's system rejects that member in not only ARHG's system but also the health funds under its umbrella.

I will contact Registered Professionals as soon as the process has been finalised and the various funds' members can claim for hypnotherapy.

MedibankMedibank Private
The ASCH has signed the Medibank Private agreement for 2026.

A new requirement of note is a questionnaire for home-based clinics, which I will adapt to suit hypnotherapists. The questionnaire will be sent to new Registered Professionals.

Registered Professional members' obligations

It is important that you:
notify me as soon as possible of any changes to your clinic address(es)
send me your updated insurance Certificate of Currency
send me your updated First Aid Certificate.
As a reminder, when you are audited, a health fund asks me to provide evidence of your:
diploma in hypnotherapy
OPD card showing supervision hours and OPD activities
insurance Certificate of Currency
First Aid Certificate
Failure to provide these documents can result in a slap on the wrist for me and you losing your provider status with that health fund.

NEW MEMBER BENEFIT: Community Connect Sessions
Zoom picAttendance qualifies for peer supervision points!

The ASCH is pleased to introduce a new ASCH member benefit this year: our Community Connect Sessions.

We know that working as a hypnotherapist can sometimes feel isolating. These monthly online sessions are available to all ASCH members, and are designed to offer a welcoming space for connection, conversation and shared learning. In addition, they offer the added benefit of allowing you to claim peer supervision hours. The sessions will be informal, supportive, and shaped by you.

Bring a coffee, connect with peers, and take some time for shared conversation, reflection, and learning.

Sessions will be hosted by our ASCH State/Region Representatives, and offer a flexible, participant-led format.

Benefits include:

- Connection with peers
- Peer supervision (contributing to supervision hours)
- Informal, confidential discussions around challenges, successes, wellbeing and other topics on your mind
- Networking and relationship building
- Opportunities for sharing and learning

- We’d Love Your Input -

As our members are based across different time zones and have varied commitments, your preferences are important in shaping these sessions.

As such, please look out for a very short survey that we will send out soon asking for your preferences around session length, day and time.

After we hear from you, we will share dates and times for our 2026 Community Connect Sessions.
