Sally Kingsford-Smith Naturopathic Herbalist and Reiki Practitioner Gentle health transformations with healing herbs, reiki, wisdom and TLC to help you enjoy your life more fully. Would you like to gently transform your health?

Lift your energy? Enjoy feeling better and more like your old self? I work with women just like you, who are fatigued, run down, stressed. Life is not as much fun as it used to be. You may have an unhappy digestive system with bloating, cramping, irritable bowel symptoms; or maybe headaches and or an irregular menstrual cycle. You wake tired and are often cranky when you don’t mean to be. Life is

on top of you – you're not on top of it. Maybe you've had medical tests which indicate that everything’s fine, there’s nothing wrong with you, however you know you don't feel well and are not experiencing the optimal health that is possible for you. You want to, and you deserve to, feel better. The work we'll do together can help you get back on top of life so you will feel like your happy healthy self again.

People often ask me why I continue teaching this masterclass after all these years.

The answer is quite simple.

Over more than two decades in clinical practice, I've seen how much can change when we move beyond thinking of herbs as remedies for symptoms and begin understanding them as companions for particular kinds of people.

This way of working was deeply influenced by the teachings of Dorothy Hall, whose observations about herbs, constitution and human nature continue to inspire me today.

The knowledge I share in this course has been gathered through many years of practice, observation and learning. It has helped practitioners look at their patients differently, prescribe with greater confidence and often achieve results that surprise them.

In The Heart & Art of Traditional Herbal Medicine, we'll explore person pictures, constitutional patterns, relevant iris signs and the art of drop dosing, bringing people and plants together in a way that is both practical and deeply traditional.

If you've been wanting to deepen your understanding of herbal medicine and move beyond a purely protocol-based approach, I'd love to welcome you.

Early bird enrolment ends on Tuesday, 30th June. 2026

One of the things I love most about herbal medicine is how certain herbs seem to describe certain people so perfectly.

Chamomile often reminds me of the person who feels everything intensely and lives all their dramas twice.

Alfalfa belongs to the "white rabbit" types who are always rushing, overdoing and running themselves into depletion before they even realise it.

St John's Wort brings to mind the very sensitive souls who feel every bump in the road, the "princess and the pea" people.

Once you begin seeing herbs this way, prescribing changes. Herbs stop being isolated actions on a page and start becoming relationships between plants and people.

This way of understanding herbs was one of the many gifts Dorothy Hall brought to our profession. It encourages us to look beyond symptoms and observe the person sitting in front of us.

Over the years, I've found that these person pictures add another layer of depth and understanding to clinical practice and often help practitioners prescribe with greater confidence and nuance.

We'll spend a lot of time exploring these person pictures throughout The Heart & Art of Traditional Herbal Medicine masterclass.

I'd love to know...

Which herb person do you recognise in yourself? 🌿

Dorothy Hall’s teachings continue to influence the way I practise herbal medicine every single day.

What I valued most about her approach was the emphasis on observation. Not simply observing symptoms, but observing the whole person. Their temperament, their patterns, their vitality, their sensitivities and the story their body seemed to be telling.

There was great depth in the way she taught herbal medicine. It wasn’t rushed, and it wasn’t disconnected from the human being sitting in front of you.

Many of the philosophies explored in this masterclass come from that lineage, alongside what I’ve learnt and refined through my own years in clinic.

I think this kind of traditional knowledge matters deeply, particularly now when so much of healthcare feels fast, standardised and disconnected from the individual.

Oral traditions, observation and lived clinical experience still have enormous value. My hope is that courses like this help keep some of that wisdom alive and continue passing it on to future practitioners.

Following a meditation on my recent retreat with Jacqui Bushell I was sharing how I felt and initially I said “content” but then I realised that felt static; as if I’d reached a sort of plateau and was just sitting there, not growing.
I realised I needed a verb, an action word that describes the feeling of continually growing and building on a sense of contentment and so ‘contentalise’ was born. It became a word we all adopted and
it’s an action that I am actively aware of maintaining now that I’m settling back into my everyday life and routine

Lying on the grass, taking a break from pruning my tulsi, I am contentalising. The sky is a crazily beautiful shade of blue, the tulsi smells amaaazing, bees and butterflies visiting her are busy and a gentle breeze is kissing my cheeks.

How are you contentalising this winter solstice?

Somewhere along the way, herbal medicine became very focused on protocols and symptom lists.

“This herb for anxiety.”
“This herb for sleep.”
“This herb for digestion.”

Yet the herbalists who shaped my own learning worked very differently. They observed people carefully. They looked at constitution, personality, sensitivity, vitality and pattern.

They understood that herbs often make the most sense when we understand the kind of person they belong to.

That is a large part of what I teach in my masterclass series, The Heart and Art of Traditional Herbal Medicine.

We explore “person pictures”, constitutional patterns, relevant iris signs and the subtle art of matching plants to people rather than simply matching herbs to conditions.

Much of this teaching is rooted in the philosophies of Dorothy Hall, whose work encouraged practitioners to observe closely and trust what they saw.

Over the years, I’ve found this approach brings another layer of understanding into practice. It develops clinical observation, strengthens intuition and often changes the way practitioners prescribe altogether.

This course is for people wanting to deepen their relationship with herbal medicine and move beyond a purely protocol-based approach.

If you've been looking for a way to deepen your understanding of herbal prescribing and reconnect with traditional philosophies of our profession, perhaps this course is for you.

I don’t have the words to express my gratitude for the past few weeks I spent in France - it was amazing. I am still enjoying the delicious after glow as I transition back to daily life dog walks; cooking; gardening; tending to my practice and the beautiful folk who trust me with their health; and start preparing for my next masterclass group.

And I feel how much better I am at doing all these things, now that I am refreshed, refilled and nourished. I felt so held by the land there and by the very dear women who were part of the retreat with me Jacqui Bushell whose retreat it was, and the other two dear women who like me, were attendees. We were a most harmonious little tribe of four.

We visited verdant meadows; played in forests; met in ‘person’ herbs I have only known in brown glass bottles; inhaled the heavenly scent of the most outrageously voluptuous roses; bathed in healing waters; and laughed out loud at the sheer delight of it all. And so much more.

I am blessed 🥰

After many years of clinical practice and teaching, I’ve decided to offer this masterclass again because I still believe deeply in this way of working with herbs and people.

Over time, I’ve watched herbal medicine become increasingly fast, protocol-driven, and symptom-focused, yet some of the most valuable things I’ve learned in practice have come from slowing down and really observing the person sitting in front of me.

This course grew out of the philosophies of Dorothy Hall, along with what I’ve gathered and tested through 24 years in the clinic. It’s less about “this herb for that condition” and more about understanding the relationship between plants, constitutions, personalities and patterns.

Across six weeks, we’ll explore over 50 herbs and their person pictures, relevant iris signs, associated sun signs and the art of drop dosing. My hope is that this knowledge helps practitioners and students feel more confident, intuitive, and thoughtful in their prescribing.

I’ve now taught this masterclass fifteen times, and every group brings something special to it. I’m very much looking forward to opening it again in 2026.

Applications are now open, and recordings will be available for those unable to attend live.

I’m currently in the south of France on a plant spirit retreat with and two beautiful other women.

Their presence and this rich, rich countryside are filling my cup full to overflowing. There are many ‘pinch me moments’ as I realise, I really am here:

Meadows filled with wildflowers and herbs; rivers; medieval villages; the land rich with stories of Mary Magdalene and the Cathars; and before them Druids and Celts.

Feeling blessed and incredibly grateful

Wise Women Gathering holds such a tender place in my heart.

When it first began, I was invited to step out from the familiar quiet of my clinic and into a more visible teaching role. Each year since, I have returned with gratitude, humility and joy.

This year, it was a gift to sit alongside Erin Bailey and share Herbs of Wisdom. We spent time with motherwort, tulsi, mugwort, rosemary, skullcap and yarrow. Not only as herbs to know, but as old companions with their own stories, temperaments and teachings.

Motherwort reminds us to stay centred when life pulls us outward.

Tulsi softens the nervous system, drawing it back toward devotion and grace.

Mugwort invites dreaming, intuition and deep listening.

Rosemary brings remembrance, clarity and warmth to the spirit.

Skullcap for the moments when the mind has forgotten stillness.

Yarrow for boundaries, resilience and healing when the soul hurts.

I also had the honour of sitting on the Looking to the Future of Community Health panel, sharing in conversations that feel so important for where we go next.

Thank you to the women who gathered, listened, laughed, asked questions, shared stories and kept the fire of this work alive.

These are the places where wisdom is not only taught, but remembered.
