๐Ÿ’™ To our aged care and disability workers โ€” thank you.

So much of the care you provide happens quietly, every single day.

The patience during a meal.
The extra moment spent listening.
Following an individualโ€™s swallowing recommendations.
Noticing when something doesnโ€™t seem quite right.
Helping someone feel safe, respected and supported.

These moments may seem small, but to the people you care for, they can make an enormous difference.

To every support worker, carer, nurse and allied health professional working across aged care and disability services:

We see the work you do. We appreciate you. And we thank you for the care you give every day. ๐Ÿ’™

At Safe Swallowing Education, we're proud to support the people who make safer mealtimes possible through practical dysphagia and IDDSI education.

**โ€œOh, they always cough like that.โ€**

It's a response Barbara Braithwaite has heard repeatedly during more than 40 years working with adults in aged care and disability.

Someone coughs during a meal.

A staff member noticesโ€”but because it happens regularly, it has gradually become accepted as simply *what that person does.*

And that's concerning.

When something happens every day, it's easy for it to become part of the background.

But would your staff know when a seemingly familiar behaviour could indicate a potential swallowing problem?

โš ๏ธ **Familiar doesn't automatically mean safe.**

Your team shouldn't have to guess what matters.

๐ŸŽ“ Give your support workers and carers the dysphagia knowledge to recognise potential concerns and understand when they need attention.

She simply wasn't interested in eating.

A carer working in aged care was struggling, at mealtimes, to engage a resident living with dementia..

She cared. She was trying. But nothing seemed to work.

Then she completed our Safe Swallowing Education course.

One simple suggestion from the Course made her reconsider the resident's mealtime environment.

She made a small changeโ€”and suddenly the resident was able to engage with her meal.

๐Ÿ’ก Sometimes the difference isn't more encouragement. It's having the knowledge to see the situation differently.

Would your team know what could be affecting a person's mealtime experience?

๐ŸŽ“ Give your staff practical, evidence-based dysphagia education they can take back into everyday care.

โ€œSheโ€™s already had her thickened fluids today.โ€

A staff member once said this to Barbara after preparing a regular cup of tea for a resident who had been prescribed thickened fluids.

It wasn't because she didn't care.

She simply didn't understand.

And that's what makes gaps in dysphagia knowledge so concerning.

You can have care plans, swallowing recommendations and procedures in placeโ€”but do the people providing everyday care truly understand them?

โš ๏ธ Don't wait for an incident to expose a gap in your team's knowledge.

๐ŸŽ“ Give your staff the understanding and confidence that comes from evidence-based dysphagia education.

๐Ÿ’™ Carers need support too.

Whether they're paid professionals or family members, carers carry enormous responsibility every day.

And when the person they support has swallowing difficulties, mealtimes can bring another level of responsibility and stress.

Caring comes from the heart. But safe swallowing support also requires knowledge.

Carers shouldn't have to rely on assumptions, guesswork or trial and error when supporting someone with dysphagia.

They deserve access to education that helps them feel more informed and confident.

โญ Real feedback. Real learning. Real impact.

We love hearing how our education is helping people working in care build their knowledge.

Thank you, Caroline, for taking the time to share your experience. ๐Ÿ’™

For aged care and disability providers, feedback like this is an important reminder:

Your team can only apply the knowledge they've been given.

If your staff support people with swallowing difficulties, can you confidently say they have received appropriate dysphagia and IDDSI education?

Don't leave that knowledge to chance.

โš ๏ธ Would your staff know when NOT to guess?

When supporting someone with dysphagia, there may be times when a staff member isnโ€™t completely sure about a swallowing or mealtime recommendation.

The important question is:

Would they recognise when they need clarification โ€” or make an assumption?

Swallowing safety should never rely on guesswork.

Your organisation needs staff who understand the importance of safe, consistent mealtime support and have the confidence to recognise the limits of their knowledge.

๐ŸŽ“ DONโ€™T LEAVE IT TO GUESSWORK. TRAIN YOUR TEAM.

Our Safe Swallowing Dysphagia Management & International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation (IDDSI) Education provides practical online education for aged care and disability workers.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Invest in your team. Strengthen your duty of care. Support safer mealtimes.

๐Ÿ’™ Communication creates possibility.

This Speech Pathology Week, 23โ€“29 August, we celebrate the incredible work of speech pathologists across Australia.

Speech pathology is about so much more than speech.

Speech pathologists help people communicate, connect, participateโ€”and eat, drink and swallow safely.

For people living with dysphagia, this support can make an enormous difference to their independence, dignity, confidence and quality of life.

At Safe Swallowing Education, we're proud to play our part by helping support workers, carers and healthcare professionals better understand dysphagia and provide safer, more informed care.

๐Ÿ’™ To our fellow speech pathologists: thank you for the difference you make every day.

Communication creates possibility. Knowledge helps make that possibility safer.

Stroke can change more than movement. It can change swallowing too. ๐Ÿง

Following a stroke, dysphagia can become an importantโ€”and sometimes overlookedโ€”part of a person's ongoing care.

For support workers, carers and healthcare professionals, that raises an important question:

Would you recognise when someone's swallowing may no longer be safe?

The people supporting stroke survivors need the knowledge and confidence to recognise potential swallowing concerns and understand the importance of following recommendations consistently.

โš ๏ธ Don't wait for a swallowing incident to reveal a gap in knowledge.

๐ŸŽ“ Build your team's confidence with evidence-based dysphagia education.

๐Ÿ‘€ Would your team notice if something changed?

Supporting someone with dysphagia isn't just about following instructions.

It's also about recognising when something may have changed.

Ask yourself:

โ“ Would every member of your team know when something doesn't seem quite right?

Building awareness helps staff provide safer, more confident support.
