Is there anything NAC can't do? šŸ˜

Yay, the long-awaited follow-up to the 2013 Italian NAC-endometriosis study. This time, they got equally exciting results with significant reductions in pain and shrinking of endometriomas. Interestingly, they dosed it for only three days per week, for reasons they explain in the paper. They also discuss various mechanisms but do not mention what I think is the most important mechanism: NAC converts to glutathione, a powerful immune modulator.

It doesn't matter how much your skin care costs. šŸ’°There's a chance it's disrupting your skin microbome which controls the pH and health of your skin barrier.

Find out what ingredients to avoid and how to nourish the good bacteria that live on you, so they can support your healthy glow.

Have you heard of the vaginal microbiome? Did you know that it communicates with your gut microbiome, termed 'cross-talk'?

Like the gut microbiome, the pH of the vaginal biome is essential. The predominant species Lactobacillus makes lactic acid, preventing bad bacteria and yeasts like Candida from hanging around.

It's an amazing ecosystem. You can test your vaginal microbiome and support it so you can lower your chances of infections, endometriosis, PCOS and to support healthy pregnancy.

Is parasite cleansing right for you?

In my 6 years of helping people with their gut health and analysing the gut microbiome, I have come across many people asking for help after parasite cleansing. Understanding the larger context of the gut microbiome has made this much clear:
Parasites are not the route of all evil.
If you live in a developed country, chances are you do not have a parasite in your gut. So why do your symptoms seem to match up with all the online descriptions?

Just when you thought there couldn’t possibly be anything else that relates to theĀ human gut microbiome. New evidence suggests that even our personality traits may be shaped by our gut bugs!

This study is fascinating.

The gut microbiomes of 655 participants were analysed to determine any links between the 'Big 5' personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, conscientiousness & openness) and bacteria in the gut.

Here is a quick summary:

šŸ’” Gut microbiome composition and diversity are related to personality traits.
šŸ’” Higher levels of the genus Faecalibacterium are associated with higher levels of extraversion.
šŸ’” Lower levels of the genus Blautia are associated with higher levels of neuroticism.
šŸ’” Higher levels of the genus Bacteroides are associated with lower levels of neuroticism.
šŸ’”Higher levels of the genus Dialister are associated with higher levels of openness.

*These associations between gut microbiome and personality were independent of age, s*x, body mass index (BMI), and diet.

The gut microbiome plays a role in shaping human personality traits like neuroticism and extraversion, according to the latest research.

[Long post] The human body is mind blowing.

Here is my summary of this great article on the gut-brain axis.

1. The gut microbiota can act on the enteric nerves and the vagus nerve to transmit signals to the brain within miliseconds.
2. Endotoxins like lipopolysaccharide produced by some bacteria can trigger CNS inflammation via activation of the peripheral immune system and subsequent infiltration of these immune cells into the brain.
3. The gut has "neuropod cells" which are eteroendocrine cells synapsing with vagal neurons. These can transcript and release glutamate from sugars in the gut.
4. GABA (main inhibitory or calming neurotransmitter) is produced by species like Eubacterium, Bacteroides fragilis, and Bifidobacterium. However this cannot pass the blood brain barrier.
5. HOWEVER, the short chain fatty acid acetate (produced by colonic fermentation) CAN cross the BBB and assist with GABA metabolism in the brain.
6. Over 50% of dopamine is produced in the gut. Staphylococcus is able to convert the precurcor L-DOPA into dopamine. The gut has abundant dopamine receptors which affect gastric secretion and motility.
7. ~90% serotonin is produced peripherally, mainly by enterochromaffin cells in the gut lining which can take up tryptophan from dietary proteins.

I love myth busting! Glutamine supplementation is not a long term solution for gut health.

You see, Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in your diet and in your body – so let me tell you the average amount in all your ā€˜gut repair’ formulas…ain’t doing anything!

Unless you’re ignoring all the manufacturers’ recommendations and taking ā€˜bucket doses’ rather than teaspoons. That’s right, you heard it here first (sadly) – that 1-7g per day dose your chosen supplement company has included in their gut healing formulas, does not reflect the research in this area, it is seriously sub-therapeutic dosing! Turns out you literally do need A Gut Full of Glutamine! to improve your gut integrity šŸ™

The reason for this mismatch is that the recommended and frequently dispensed doses come from animal (rat) studies. But rats’ guts have a greater dependence on Glutamine than ours, a deficiency of this amino produces clear reproducible negative effects and lower dose supplementation fixes these brilliantly! So make sure that the research you are reading is done on humans when looking for effective dosages. That counts for all things supplements, not just glutamine!

*Old-timey remedy*

Sometimes tea just doesn't do the trick... What I'm finding with covid and the recent flu strain is that people are getting nausea, vomiting and headaches. The viruses going around seem to effect stomach digestion.

If this is you, skip straight to warm ginger beer to settle your tummy (non alcohol). This one has a great taste. Carbonated drinks have their place!
