Mia and her family once believed she would never live independently. Today, she has a home of her own.

For years, a lot was done for Mia rather than with her. A Functional Behaviour Assessment showed that her behaviours of concern were not signs of a complex condition. They were her response to boredom and having little say over her own day.

So the focus shifted to her strengths. Her support team stepped back from "doing for" Mia and started "working alongside" her, giving her room to make choices and learn through experience. As her confidence grew, supports were reduced and she began to thrive. In time, Mia moved into Supported Independent Living, something once thought impossible.

Positive Behaviour Support is about more than reducing behaviours. It is about building on a person's strengths and making room for choice, independence and positive risk-taking.

Every person's journey is different and outcomes vary. This is one example of what is possible.
